"Leno gets set to leave the `most wonderful job'"

"He will have posted an impressive 17 years as "Tonight" host, but well short of Carson's three decades that ended with his retirement in May 1992. Leno debuted as "Tonight" host a few days later.

He leaves the show atop the late-night ratings, his run abbreviated by NBC's decision five years ago to create a succession plan that gives "Tonight" to Conan O'Brien.

On the eve of his final two shows, Leno strikes an unsentimental tone. But he knows what he's leaving behind as he moves to a new, untested 10 p.m. EDT daily prime-time show for NBC this fall.

"Will I miss it? Yes, terribly. It's the most wonderful job ever in show business," he said of "Tonight," which started in 1954 with Steve Allen as host.

Unlike the solitary road life of a typical standup comedian, telling jokes to an audience of maybe 100 or so, Leno said, he had the chance to make millions of viewers laugh — and then go home each night to his wife."

Status: offline 		Jay did a great job! We're the same age and he grew up about 7 miles away from me in Andover, Mass.
I just don't care for Conan O'Brien who'll replace him. He reminds me of some drunken foolish college kid who's trying to be funny.
I put that guy Dave, what's his name on when I can't sleep.

Status: offline 		I saw him live when he was just a stand up comic in the 80's. He was funny then.   The tonight show is unwatchable to me.  It will only be even more watered down repetitive "safe" humor at 10:00pm.

Status: offline 		Leno's ok. I'm never considered him terribly entertaining but based on his ratings many others do. He would never have gotten that gig if it were not for Helen Kushnick.

Oh, me too.  Johnny was wonderful.  I cheesed out and bought the Tonight Show boxed set from an infomercial once - so glad I did....

Status: offline 		I too will miss Leno. He has been part of my night routine that I looked forward too. I am not a Conan fan, so i need a new routine.
