Betty Friedan died last night. Her book, "The Feminine Mystique", was my 12th birthday present from my daddy. i cannot say i understood it all, but i did understand my daddy loved me very much.

Feminism has become, to many, an archiac movement over the past 40 years. However, women my age can remember when a divorcee had no chance socially; when it was a scandal for women to hold a job; when a Man earned what -- 90%? -- more than a woman. We many of us nostaglically check off "1950's household" but we are using rose-colored glasses.

It hurts that Coretta Scott King and Betty Friendan are both so suddenly gone. What truely great women.

Yes, there's already a thread about it here.

She was an amazing woman who's accomplishments are commendable. Hopefully in the upcoming generation's we will see more Betty Friedan's so girls/women will have an icon to look up too.

I read the other thread for some reason it got turned into a Gorean hogwashfest, I'm sure if Betty had read it she would have had some witty commentary to make.
