ORIGINAL: Musicmystery Lotus, The poll is, though, clearly loaded questioning. Is there no difference between racism and advocacy? Is there no allowance for discriminating judgement, like estimating an older person will have more experience than someone younger? Your poll just allows takers to choose their particular false dilemma and display their own bias. In short, it sheds no real light on the original question. the use of race to establish and justify a social hierarchy and system of power that privileges, preferences or advances certain individuals or groups of people usually at the expense of others. There is of course a difference between racism and advocacy. The point in question comes from the statement by Sotomayor that she is some how more qualified because she is a latina and not a white man. Is she a raist.. and I have not answered this question I believe in an out and out fashion. My answer would be I don't know if she is or is not. She may have just had a poor choice of words. The point remains that those words came out of her mouth. I understand the argument of context that some wish to use. The problem comes that if it was said by a white man then he would be a piara. Others would make sure they he was drummed out of public life without the chances we are expected to give Sotomayor. There is no doubt that Sotomayor may be a good judge. There is nothing wrong if she wishes to be an advocet for her comunity. However if she wishes to have an advocacy agenda then the high court is not the place for it. For years and years white people held people of color down. They held them there and told each other that they where better, smarter. This was wrong then and it's wrong now, no matter the color of the skin of the person doing it.
