UPS must hire nothing but incompitant turds - 6/3/2009 6:22:54 AM

Ever wonder if UPS only hires complete Morons as drivers?  I have to.  I really, REALLY, have to wonder that very thing.

My cats knocked something over onto my blackberry during the middle of the night a few days ago, causing liquid damage.  No big - I have equipment protection insurance.  Should have been no problem to file a claim, wait the 2 business days for the replacement to show up, and that shoulda been that.  I file the claim, agree to pay the $100 deductible (cheap compared to paying the $600 for the replacement phone outta pocket), get the email confirmation that the claim has been processed and approved and then a tracking email with UPS to show it's actually been Sent.  I sit back to wait out the time until it gets here, calm and relaxed despite my electronic memory of Everyone's phone numbers being completely inaccessable figuring that today I'd have the new one and could get the information transfered from one to the other.

So the replacement shows up this morning, before 8am.  I'm awake but not dressed - knock at the door, I grab cloths and get dressed on my way to answer it, since I'm Expecting the phone to be delivered at some point this afternoon.  UPS truck is already no where in sight by the time I get there, but a box that wasn't there at 630 when I let one of the cats out is sitting on the porch.

Good, yes?  Nope.  It arrived just at the end of a pouring rain.  The box was damaged (one corner crushed) and so soaking wet that it literally disintegrated in my hands when I picked it up off the porch.  The plastic bags which had been inside the box (supposedly to "protect" the electronics inside) weren't sealed, and were filled with water.  I gingerly remove the battery that I'm supposed to place in the new phone from it's water filled plastic - knowing that this is Not a good sign - and check the end.  It's useless.  There's this color changing box on the end of the battery that's normally white - but turns pink if the battery gets wet and becomes damaged - it's glaring, bright pink.  The phone itself doesn't Appear damaged - or wet - upon first examination though, so I call the insurance carrier who handled the replacement to let them know what the condition of things was when it arrived.  By this point it's been less than 10 minutes since I got to the knocked on door to find the soaked box sitting there.  The folding travel charger that was in the box was damp - and when I turned it in my hands to check on it, dumped nearly 2 tablespoons full of water out of it's interior.

So I work my way through the stupid voice system, pushing various buttons on my land line phone as I need to in order to get to talk to an actual Human, and That takes another 10 minutes in and of itself.  (Gods and Demons I HATE THOSE VOICE SYSTEMS!)  I'm positively Fuming by the time a real live human finally picks up the line on the other end. I go through 20 minutes on the phone with the customer service rep, during which point she has me take the back off the replacement phone to look for it's ID number - only to find that It's full of water as well, despite the outside looking like it had managed not to get damaged in that manner.  I have to pause here, and give kudos to Asurion, the equipment protection insurance company.  Once I got past the phone voice system and to a live person, they were jonny on the spot.  They're overnighting me Yet Another replacement - at absolutely no charge, not even the normal $100 that it "should" have cost me to replace it again.  It should be here tomorrow, and they're using someone OTHER than UPS as a carrier for this one.  Which is probably a good thing, cause frankly - had the UPS bozo still been outside when I got to the door, I probably woulda ripped his head off verbally.

I'm going to be filing a complaint with UPS.  Not that I think it'll actually do any Good, but I'm going to do so anyway.  Since I have a business account with them, who knows - maybe they'll actually listen.  They certainly aren't going to like what I have to say.  So - a word of advice.  If you're going to ship via UPS, since their rates are nominally better than those for FedEx, remember not to ship anything that could remotely be damaged in transit by incompitant twits.  If it's electronics - don't be surprised if it arrives soaked through with water and ruined.

Peach, the UPS guy has a set number of deliveries he has to make.  UPS works their employees hard, and this is what happens.

UPS is nothing more than slavedrivers. I used to work security for them in New Orleans post-Katrina and they had a high turnover rate. The workers are encouraged to toss the items in the name of speed...so your package would not be treated so gingerly.

Stick it to them, I'll say.

Not the guys I worked with. They were lucky to get $200 a week and this is in the distribution centers.

I used to own a bicycle shop.  One of the services we offered to our customers was to pack and ship their bicycles.  At the time, the only game in town for this was UPS; FedEx was still an air-only company and the post office would not take anything that big.

One of our customers was moving to NYC and asked us to ship their 2 brand new $600 mountain bikes, so we boxed them up and shipped them out.

When the UPS driver delivered them, turned out that the building had a buzz-in lock on the front door, and they weren't home to answer the buzzer.  In those days they required a signature on every package.  Rather than drop a note in their box saying they had attempted delivery of packages, the driver asked some person who was leaving that building if they would sign for the packages, clearly labeled as bicycles on the boxes.

The person signed with a scribble, and of course the bikes were never seen again.  Hey, free bikes!  We filed a claim with UPS and at first they refused to pay, saying the bikes had been delivered and signed for.  It took 7 months to get UPS to pay for losing the bikes.

Now they no longer require signatures and I suppose they would just leave them on the street or in front of the apartment door.

Yep, they do. We've gotten lots of packages here. Some required a signature. The ones that didn't, got set outside our door (in an apartment complex that's already had break-ins) for us to get at our leisure. Much like the OP, I had a knock at the door. I was dresed, sitting no more than 15 steps from the door and by the time I got there, the box was sitting on the ground and he was down the hall, down the stairs before I opened the door. When I sarcastically said "thanks" he yelled back "you're welcome." I replied "Good thing it didn't get stolen from this "secure" spot on the ground!"

Thanks for the tipoff Peach, I was contemplating using them, I shall reconsider now, they're not as dominant here so it shouldn't be too hard to find someone else.

Who at UPS makes $30 an hour???  You can go to there web site and the starting pay is under 10 bucks, it's only part time 3-4 hours per day and you have to pay for union fees and uniforms.

It used to be a great job years ago, but now with their new contract new hires will never see the money people use to make there

That is dependent on the shipper. I have to sign for most of my UPS items.

If you want the item to arrive in good condition but don't care where it gets delivered, use FedEx. If the item must be delivered to the correct address but you don't care what condition it arrives in, use UPS. They both suck.

Most people I know keep a dry box on the porch with a note to carriers to stick the package in there. Especially if you have a business account, I'm surprised you haven't set up a safe place for things to be left.

Here they open the screen door and leave it between that and the house door. And I leave a note to do so when I'm expecting something.

Fed Ex in winter won't even try to deliver to me, up my driveway. UPS always does. I get a note in the mailbox saying he couldn't make it, call the number to inform them I was home and he didn't even try and to have him turn right around and call me from the bottom of the driveway so I can come get it. I'd rather have UPS.

When the value of a package exceeds a minimum value (not sure where the threshold is these days) you  (the sender) can make a signature mandatory for delivery. They will then make a maximum of three delivery attempts. If they cannot contact the receiver it will be held for 7 days at the nearest distribution warehouse where the receiver (will be notified) can pick it up. After that it will be returned to the sender.

On another note though.....here's a UPS Delivery to see....

We had a good driver who delivered at the shop. My house was also on his route, so he would often deliver my medicine to me at work, knowing no one was home. If they lost something he'd help find it, make sure to get it to us later that day if he could, that kind of thing. They moved him to another route, their policy is to rotate routes for some reason.

I do a lot of online shopping and have never had a problem with UPS.  Their deliveries come very fast, and the drivers have always been really nice.  I can't think of a single time that I've ever had a problem with them.

I don't think they should have left the box in the rain.  They can always leave a stick-it note on the door showing that they were there.  You just contact the number on the note, and they will come by again with the item, they have excellent customer service.  Unfortunately, op, I think you just had bad luck on this occasion,  and maybe a new driver who didn't really take his job seriously.  A bit of a hassle, but at least you're getting the replacement.l

Once upon a time I had a business that I ran from the house and UPS was my main shipping agent because they were so much cheaper and easier to deal with than Fed Ex. My driver was the best and I never had a problem with UPS ever. Fed Ex home delivery is a different story.

I am sorry to hear about your phone, Peach. It is so very frustrating when they go down and the replacing turns into a major hassle. Good luck with your complaint resolution.

Not all of them are incompetent.  Our driver is though.  One example, I checked a delivery status on something that was on the truck, went out to the front porch to smoke, while smoking saw the truck go right by, checked the status when I came in and found "Unable to deliver, No one home at address."

I promptly called the local hub and chewed their asses and made them put me on hold while they made their driver turn his butt back around and bring me the package while I stood on the porch, cell phone in hand.

This was about the 4th or 5th time things haven't been delivered when someone was home, often sitting in the living room because we're expecting something important.

Marie, this was by NO means the first time I've had trouble with the UPS drivers in my area.  It's a Chronic problem around here, and the local hub tends to blow off complaints unless the person doing the complaining holds a multi-million dollar account with them or ships/recieves stuff practically Daily.  It's a bit ironic at times, because UPS's closest store - and the closest FedEx store - are right across the street from each other, and within 5 blocks of my home.  We've had one or two decent drivers for the route closest to the store - but those have been quite a while back, and none at all any good in the past 2 years.  I hate the FedEx rates, but it's been the same driver for 4 years now and he's extremely good at his job - when I have shipments coming in from some of my suppliers for things like EOs and Oils that are shipped in glass, I always use FedEx these days because if I Don't, I have to wonder if half the contents of the shippment are going to be broken when I open the box.  The FedEx guy ALWAYS waits for someone to answer the door - or leaves a note and tries to deliver the next day if my car isn't in the driveway.  (He's been on this route long enough to get to know his regulars - and some of us who are only semi-regular - on a first name basis and to know when we are/aren't home.)  With the UPS drivers, they never wait for the door to actually get answered and inevitably leave large boxes simply sitting out in the open on my front porch if I'm not home - unless it requires a signature, in which case they usually don't even stop and attempt to deliver, they simply log it as undeliverable and I have to wait for a phone call to go pick it up at the store.

This morning was particularly frustrating because it took me less than a minute to get to the door when I heard the knock - I was already awake, and in the process of getting dressed for the day - and yet the truck was gone so fast that it wasn't even still visible at the end of the street!  This is a Residential Area with a HIGH volumn of spawn in the various houses on this block.  It's summer and school is out.  The speed limit in this specific neighborhood - POSTED - is 15mph.  I've lived here for 35 of my 43  years, so I KNOW what speed you have to be driving - weaving around parked cars, since many of my neighbors have multiple vehicals and not enough driveway to park them all - to get to the end of the street in a given amount of time.  What am I getting at?  Let's start with the fact that the driver had to be doing at least twice the posted speed limit to have already turned the corner when I got to the porch.  Had he gotten here any Later in the day, there woulda been neighbor spawn playing out in the street from at least 7 other houses between me and the end of the street, at least one of whom is deaf (it's even Posted that there's a deaf child that plays in the area, so that people don't go whipping around the parked cars to fast to hit their breaks) - and all of whom are prone to chasing each other and balls into the street between parked cars.   That fact in and of itself made me want to rip his head off - with my teeth.  To know that, and know that they were careless with a package that was Clearly Marked as Fragile - crushing part of it, allowing it to get so soaked with rainwater that it was clear it had been left to sit in the rain prior to ever being placed on the truck for delivery (it had Quit raining by the time the driver put it on my front porch, so it sure as fuck didn't get soaked in the minute it took me to get to the door!) - really REALLY pisses me off.  Knowing that the office, whom I called right after posting the OP, is blowing it off and figuratively shrugging it's shoulders in a "so what" attitude - Again - is simply the icing on the cake.

Wow.  Sounds like a bunch of jamokes running that station.  If you can't get a response from the superviser of that particular UPS office, the only other option is to tell the retailers that you're buying from how their chosen shipper screwed up your merchandise and/or delivery.   It might make a difference to some merchants, eventually, if they get enough complaints.
