LotusSong -> 'Splain this one to me Lucys!!! (6/3/2009 8:15:02 AM)

We have another taped message surfacing from BinLaden. With all our technologies.. how come we don't trace where it came from BACK to the SOURCE to apprehend the sucker?

DomKen -> RE: 'Splain this one to me Lucys!!! (6/3/2009 8:40:54 AM)

Based on an audio tape hand delivered to Al Jazeera that is believed to be several weeks old already? I really doubt that even if the original location could be determined that OBL is still there.

This one doesnt have a clue:p[;)]

MarsBonfire -> RE: 'Splain this one to me Lucys!!! (6/3/2009 9:47:44 AM)

Perhaps Memorex should start making individual tape cassettes with GPS chips in them.

Arpig -> RE: 'Splain this one to me Lucys!!! (6/3/2009 9:53:19 AM)

There is no way to trace an audio (or video) tape. That is why OBL uses this medium to get his message out. The other advantage of using audio tapes, is there is no really reliable method of determining who is in fact making the tape. For all we know OBL died a long time ago, and these tapes are fakes. There is no certain way to know one way or another, do not be surprised if OBL continues making audio tapes well past the age of 150.

We trace things like stock numbers and bar codes to the original source and can ID who bought them. If the tapes are hand delivered.. what's keepng us from following the messenger? .... or maybe Obama has found a use for Bush's boogyman....

......bar codes are on the outer packaging, not the tapes themselves.

....we probably are. However there are a hundred ways to lose the tail It's extremely unlikely that the messenger has ever met OBL.....or met anyone who has met him. It'll be through intermediaries and dead drops. They're not stupid.

...have you and Sanity been getting it on and not telling us?

First of all you assume that there are stock numbers or bar codes on the casettes, remember that it is rather easy, especially in Asia, to acquire bootleg versions of almost anything, products with no identifying numbers whatsoever, or with counterfeit numbers copied from the original items.

Second, even if the tapes are legit, with legit numbers, etc. how on earth are you going to trace who bought them when they were bought for cash at some stall in a bazaar, or even in a Wal-Mart. I don't know how things work in the US, but up here, I have never been asked for ID to purchase something like tapes or CDs when I was paying cash, so there would simply be no way to trace the items to me, the best that could be done would be to figure out at what time they were bought, but even that would be un;likely if they were purchased from a street vendor, or flea market or garage sale.

Third, you are assuming that a radio or TV station has the wherewithal to follow anybody who delivers something to them. The manpower required to do this is beyond the capabilities of the US army. let alone those of a radio or TV station.

Suffice to say, these items are effectively untraceable, and I for one would not want to live under the sort of regime that would need to be in place to make them traceable.

Fast Reply -

The methods used are not high tech, therefore they are harder to trace.

kdsub -> RE: 'Splain this one to me Lucys!!! (6/3/2009 11:46:54 AM)

It is hard especially when Al Jazeera wants notoriety and headlines...yes even an Arabic-language news network is not immune. They do not want their number one worldwide news source compromised or captured.

If they were truly interested in capture all it would take is a nod to undercover agents when the tapes are delivered. This at least could start a search.

Very good point. He probably owns Al Jazeera. He's hiding in plain sight :)

LadyEllen -> RE: 'Splain this one to me Lucys!!! (6/3/2009 2:28:36 PM)

Surely the CEOs and distributors of all blank tape manufacturers should be investigated, for aiding and abetting an offender? They surely ought to have taken sufficient steps to ensure their products could not be used for terrorist activities?
Or else, they are deliberately not taking such steps in order to provide aid and succour to an enemy?
And what of all this fuss about securing the supply chain to prevent terrorists taking advantage of it?
I mean, why bother overturning the constitutional protections afforded us, if we're not to make use of it?

My question is what keeps us from a simple assignation instead of thousands dying in war?  I'm so over it.

There's that small problem of finding him.

(btw, it's assassination)

Blast this auto correct software!  What happened to the "edit" button for posts, anyways?

thornhappy -> RE: 'Splain this one to me Lucys!!! (6/3/2009 5:21:45 PM)

We only get an hour (or two) to make edits, after that it's posterity.

Assignation was kind of cute, since one definition was meeting, as with lovers!

Death to autocorrection!

LotusSong -> RE: 'Splain this one to me Lucys!!! (6/3/2009 8:48:19 PM)

How interesting that this has been transferred to the Random stupidity forum.  I wonder if CNN knows their news stories are Stupid.  This was posted with all sincerity of a constructive discussion.  Go figure.

Right. "Make love, not war" is the expression, if I recall correctly.
