Terrific news for those of us who love mosquitoes!

quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) - A mysterious fungus attacking America's bats could spread nationwide within years and represents the most serious threat to wildlife in a century, experts warned Congress Thursday...
As a state wildlife biologist from Vermont put it, one cave there was turned into a morgue, with bats freezing to death outside and so many carcasses littering the cave's floor the stench was too strong for researchers to enter. They also warned that if nothing more is done to stop its spread, the fungus could strike caves and mines with some of the largest and most endangered populations of hibernating bats in the United States.
At stake is the loss of an insect-eating machine. The six species of bats that have so far been stricken by the fungus can eat up to their body weight in insects a night, reducing insects that destroy crops, forests and carry disease such as West Nile Virus. "We are witnessing one of the most precipitous declines of wildlife in North America," said Thomas Kunz, director of the Center for Ecology and Conservation Biology at Boston University, who said that between $10 million and $17 million is needed to launch a national research program into the fungus.
Merlin Tuttle, a world-renowned bat expert and president of Bat Conservation International in Austin, Texas, said that white-nose syndrome was probably the most serious threat to wildlife in the past century. He also called for more research to determine its cause and how it was being spread."Never in my wildest imagination had I dreamed of anything that could pose this serious a threat to America's bats," Tuttle told the panel. "This is the most alarming event in the lifetime of a person who has devoted his life to recovering these populations."...

"The severe mortality and sudden spread of white-nose syndrome demonstrates the need for a rapid response beyond closing caves where bats live," said Del. Madeleine Z. Bordallo, D-Guam, who said the syndrome "could be an ecological and economic disaster if it remains unchecked."

How exactly the fungus kills bats is poorly understood, but once the fungus attaches it invades tissues. The bat then fidgets, burning up its excess energy. Most simply starve and die, others leave the cave prematurely to look for nonexistent food in the winter and perish.

Extinction - it's not just for honeybees anymore!

I hope it does not affect the colony down in Austin. At least once a year, I go watch the bats fly out and eat the buggers!

I remember reading/seeing something about this not long ago. It is scary. I love the bats that swoop around my house at dusk. I've even thought about building some little bat houses for them.

First the honeybees now the insect eating bats. Bad signs of environment stressors on specialized species and the consequences could be significant.

All right. So I read a very in depth article on this in the NY Times last year. Part of what the article mentioned was this fungus started after we had the West Nile illness outbreak from mosquitoes. To get a handle on that, we sprayed and sprayed with toxins. The bats then ate the mosquitoes who were infected, and this has been the end result. Thye became suspectable to this fungus. its horrible really when you see the photos. As far as I knew, right now, its a problem here in the northeast.

I'm not sure how far this has gone. But this is pretty much how lots of bad things happen. Lets say, we bring in plants from other countries, not understanding that the plants take hold and kill off other plants. The end result is some sort of serious problem that we then need to fix. But really cant very well. I think Georgia is expereincing that problem with plants right now.

We spray insects but dont think about, that the insects are eaten by whom? Bats. We bring in cats off ships to isolated islands, see the cats have gotten out of contol, kill off the cats and have the rabbit population explode and then the rabbits eat all the greenery on the island, thereby making another problem.

Right or wrong, this is how we screw ourselves over. Fact. Not fiction.

Bullshit.

A far more serious threat is the declining honeybee population.  The experts are there to exaggerate their case to weasel more funding.

The problem will take care of itself, given a few years.  Nature moves in cyclical ways - a population will shrink, then boom again.  The population is shrinking, and extending it straight-line is ridiculous.

To put this in perspective - I bought a house and then found out that it had bees in it.  No issue with me because the bees do not enter the living space.  I asked a local apiarist about it and he told me that all beekeepers have to spray for mites.  If I simply didn't, all the bees would be gone soon.

It's been two years now and I've never seen healthier looking bees in my life.

Yeah, that was my gut reaction too. Still a serious issue, though, IMO. But probably a little bit short of the end of civilization.

Well, no disrespect intended, but what do you expect? If you have a question about bees, you spend the extra 50 bucks or whatever and ask somebody who's an expert on bees. You want to save a few dollars by consulting someone who's an authority on apes, you have to expect you might not get the best information. Just sayin', is all.

Weird, Panda. That's not the reference I was meant, but I have a feeling that line was used in M*A*S*H at one point, too. I just can't find proof of it, lol.
