The mug must of had some kind of metalic in it or something because normal mugs don't get so hot in the microwave after 3 minutes they burn you with out touching them hardly. Even my dad touched the mug lightly and confirmed that yeah it was super hot. My finger turned red and smarts like a mother fucker from a feather light brush to the mug. [:(]

well, then you've learned a lesson today.

THREE minutes in the microwave?  That would make coffee boil, wouldn't it?

Christine, you are a shining example of elegant response!

Considering that 2 minutes on high in most modern microwaves will have a beverage boiling, 3 minutes will definitely overheat it, depending on the wattage of the oven.

So, go back to high school science class, remember your lessons on conductivity and try something like 1:30 first.... if it still needs warming, try adding increments of 15 or 30 seconds.

(And run the burnt fingers under cold water....)

Not all mugs just because they are china--are microwave safe.

YHMA, I'm so sorry to hear about your burn, and I hope it's feeling better. If not, please get it looked at.

Rain's suggestion is a good one. Heat the coffee for maybe a minute, then do small subsequent intervals till it's just right.

Most mugs though can handle 3 minutes and not heat up the handle of the mug. This mug must of had led in it or metalic paint or something because a normal mug while hot, would not be so hot you couldn't safely brush your fingers against it. Some coffe mugs do have lead that makes them unsafe to microwave. Only thing is, this one didn't have the warning most mugs that are not mico safe do.

I ran it under water and then I folded a paper towl up into a small strip put an ice  cube in it and wrapped it around my finger.

Thank you DC me to it hurt really bad and I could of broke the microwave door, because when I jerked my hand back I  jerked it back so fast I slammed the micro door on the way out lol.

It still stings, but not as bad and it's random, and for a moment I forget and I'm like that's odd why does the side of my finger hurt, and then I'm like oh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah that's right.

They would say they weren't though right?

My dad got the mug from the dollar store, and almost all the mugs said contains lead to not microwave, and this one did not so he figured out let me get this one for my wife, since it don't have the lead warning on it.

If mugs contain lead they aren't suitable for drinking out of as the lead can leach into what you are drinking.

PanthersMom -> RE: Yikes that coffe cup got so hot it burnt me and I barely touched it. (6/5/2009 5:24:58 PM)

most of the stuff from the dollar stores these days seems to come from china where they don't bother to put lead labels on stuff.  after all, they just don't give a damn who they poison, foreigners or their own people, as evidenced by the recent product manufacturing problems they've allowed to be brought to light in the media.  i wouldn't trust chinese made dinnerware as the possibility the glaze is tainted is too great.

I often reheat my coffee.

I have never gone past 2 minutes, on any microwave.  High or low wattage.
Dont get me wrong, I do go for as hot as I can drink.  Until I get to know a coffee cup/mug (you know the wining and dining period where you convince it not to get to hot) and how hot it gets I am cautious.

The tinkerbell mug my sister got for me in nyc was 2 minutes to the right temp, while here its just 1 1/2.
Different watts, climate, humidity, but different none the less.

With a new mug, its always best to start lower and see how it going rather than risk it boiling over or like what happened to you the handle burning you.

That's a good tip but it didn't boil over, it was all in the cup but the cup was so hot, because  of it not being microwave safe* which I didn't know* You couldn't touch the cup.

Couldn't have said it better (or more politely).

Yeah better hope your mug doesn't have led in the glazing because that's why it heated up so hot and so quickly..

If there had been anything metallic at all on the mug, you'd have known it....the light show would have definitely caught your attention.  Look for something labled microwave safe.....as stated, just because it's ceramic or china doesn't mean it's safe to use in the microwave...I have pyrex ware I use, and anything over 2 minutes heats it up enough that the only way I'm grabbing it is with a potholder.....hard lesson learned!

CatdeMedici -> RE: Yikes that coffe cup got so hot it burnt me and I barely touched it. (6/6/2009 5:05:43 AM)

Actually that's not correct--maybe most of the mugs you currently have don't heat up that way, however, unless the mug says microwave safe, it isn't--that doesnt mean it will necessarily break or explode, it means it may reach extreme temps rapidly as well.

It has to be the china like materials and the glaze used---any metallic would have sparked or arced in the microwave.

stella41b -> RE: Yikes that coffe cup got so hot it burnt me and I barely touched it. (6/6/2009 5:23:37 AM)

I have a 3 minute rule with ceramic containers when using the microwave which is either halved or a third taken off if the ceramic dish or cup contains liquid. But you know even after a minute and a half something ceramic can get too hot to handle without an ovenglove. Beyond the three minutes I use a plastic container.

Hope your finger heals up.
