SomethingCatchy -> Ghost in the attic (6/5/2009 5:30:12 PM)

So a couple of strange things have happened recently (about three months).
Once was when the hall light was turned on while everyone was in bed and the house had been double checked for locked doors and lights put out. When the boy got up to turn the light out, he found that the stove timer was going off, even though it'd been hours since anyone had messed with the stove and it can only be set for as long as an hour. It would have gone off sooner

Second was a few nights ago I heard a very loud sigh sound, like the sound of a new window on good runners opening or closing. It sounded like it was in my bedroom, although the only window that makes that sound is in the bathroom and the bedroom door was shut and the bathroom door in the hallway was shut. The window was closed and locked. My dog jumped up when she heard the sound and searched the house.

And today I was putting some things away in the attic and I had my flashlight up there. I left it on twice, but decided to turn it off the third time I went down to get another bag. When I went back up with the bag the flashlight was on. I was startled.

So I believe we have some sort of ghost or spirit in the house and it tends to hang around the attic entrance in the hall (where the hall light switch is) and maybe venture into the kitchen which is right off the hall.

What should I do? I don't feel threatened or creeped out, but I'm not exactly thrilled to have something in my house.

You could present your case to the The Atlantic Paranormal Society for their investigation. This is the group that's highlighted on the SciFi Channel television show Ghost Hunters.

PanthersMom -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/5/2009 7:01:30 PM)

we had an attic dweller that liked to move the boxes around at night.  that one didn't bother us as much as the one in the basement that creeped my dad out something awful.  that room was always so cold you could store ice cream in there no matter how warm the rest of the basement was.  dad wouldn't let us go in there.  if it bothers you, go ahead and see if someone can get you some answers.  sounds like it's a practical joker.

Say hi to it, let it know that it is YOUR house, and you're happy to live in peace.  You could also try and communicate with it with yes/no questions making the flashlight flash...

Yeah, I loves them GH boys!

Aileen1968 -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/5/2009 8:07:12 PM)

Just make sure they don't eat your brains. Evil ghosts like to do that. Heh.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/5/2009 8:19:31 PM)

I thought that was evil ghouls? Evil ghosts POSSESS your brain!  bwahahahah!

windchymes -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/5/2009 8:29:38 PM)

Oh, I KNOW there's something in my new house, but it doesn't seem to want to hurt me, so I let him/her/it stay.  In fact, I hope it manifests itself better with time.

That night that I heard what sounded like a bag full of pots and pans tumble down the stairs and then crash at the bottom, but when I got up to see what it was and saw the stairwell empty, not a thing there that could have made that sound, I knew for sure.

MakeMeSmile4U -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/5/2009 8:55:22 PM)

I used to have problems with lights.  Street lights would turn off when I drove under them, then flick back on when I passed.  Even the lightbulbs in my house would flicker and burn out at mind-blowing frequency.  I think its just deceased loved ones saying "hi", but eventually my husband told me i needed to ask them to identify themselves some other way because he was spending THAT much time changing lightbulbs.  Lol.  As long as they are friendly I dont mind.

I've had other spirits that tried to communicate with me, but couldnt...I just knew they were there because they'd wake me or I'd feel the cold-spot in the room.  I just explained that I thought they needed to move on in order to find peace and happiness...and they left.

The only time I was really creeped out by an unseen spirit is when my daughter was a toddler and I'd hear her talking to 'someone' thru the baby monitor.  When I'd go in to investigate I'd hear her saying "ok..bye bye" and no one was there.
I like to think it was my dad, but not knowing was kinda weird...

when I was a teenager, my mom, brother and I felt we were being visited by a spirit.  all sorts of strange goings on, but the number one was the stove timer going off around 3:00 am.

of course, this being long before "Paranormal State" et al, we didn't know what to do...in the end my mom lit some candles and told them to leave.  it worked.

if you believe you do have an univited guest, the best thing to do is tell them you don't want them disturbing you and that you want them to leave.  it's not like you can file a lawsuit or anything [:D]

PeonForHer -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/6/2009 3:34:51 AM)

Over here you can hire security equipment for this sort of caper.  A hidden camera should show you what's going on.

sirsholly -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/6/2009 3:39:42 AM)

tell it to go toward the light....

the spirit wants to be with you as much as you want it with you (nothing personal...but not at all).

Send it to the light....

eta...it does not want to hurt or scare you. What it has been doing is just letting you know he/she is there. Probably saying hi...

Yes - what Sappi said. I'm a huge fan of TAPS/GHI.  I'd love to meet those guys - there's just something special about that Jason. <yummy>.

I'm sure it would be frustrating to try and communicate from another dimension. You can't make yourself heard in conventional ways, can't always make yourself seen without some electronic help - all that's left is moving pots and pans and playing with light switches.

Last week Grant said something I liked ~  "it is not unusual for the very young to be aware of entities because babies/kids haven't closed themselves off to the possibilities."

Wonder how an ultimatum would work...."show yourself and assume some household responsibilities or leave...."  If it's a male entity - just say "I love you" - it will be gone by morning ;)

I lol'd [:)]

beargonewild -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/6/2009 7:46:38 AM)

Basically you a couple options of handling this:

1) If you really don't want this visitor around anymore, acquire some sweetgrass or white sage and smudge the entire house.

2) If your okay with having it there, simply go about your everyday activities and this entity should be content with causing the odd unexplainable phenomena. If this isn't the case then see #1

eta: If you're not familiar about sweet grass and white sage, talk to a native elder or shaman and they can guide you and show you how to smudge your house and yourself. Many Native teachings say that a spirit has no place here and should not be allowed to stay around but to be guided to the spirit world.

Vendaval -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/6/2009 1:28:36 PM)

You have some good basic advice here. If things do turn ugly contact a Catholic priest or a paranormal specialist.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/6/2009 1:34:52 PM)

If you have a Baptist spirit, it will just LOL at the priest...

beargonewild -> RE: Ghost in the attic (6/6/2009 2:22:47 PM)

*snort*
Though most annoying entities will depart if they are made not welcomed in a home.
