Popeye you are on fire tonight!
LOL
If you get a chance please try to catch Oprah tonight, I know it is repeated in our area at

1 a.m. EST.
There is a college graduate on the show, working 2 jobs, and one is at Starbucks!
I always think about you when I hear about college graduates working as a coffee barista at Starbucks!

Maybe soon, you will need to have a college degree to qualify to work at Starbucks!

Considering the fact that these kids can't get jobs, we have far too few police officers, and our vets coming home aren't able to pass the psych profiles for the PO or Fire departments, I'd say it was a pretty smart idea.

I don't see anything wrong with college/university graduates joining the police/fire brigade. For me the most important things would be that they show maturity, are calm in a crisis, have sound reasoning skills, pass all of the psych/fitness tests etc and are motivated to work.

I have a friend who went to uni and studied political science and when he graduated he promptly went out and got a job driving trucks which he loves.  He has never regretted going to uni as he got the opportunity to study something he loved and once he completed his degree he chose to do something else which he loves...its a win - win.

First off, I don't see anything wrong with it, but then I worked with local police/fire crew as an EMT on the ambulance crew for 6 years; I can tell you first-hand horror stories. If someone wants to do the job, can qualify for it and actually do it, let them, I don't give a rat's ass about their age because quite frankly, enough runs will weed the losers out. Or the certification process.

As for college degrees, I have 2 friends. One wanted to be a marine biologist his entire life. Studied hard, got top of his class, accepted into UC Berkeley in California. Graduated with honours and promptly enlisted in the Army. Why? Because he found out that without a minimum of Master's or Ph.D., he wasn't even going to get internships anywhere. So he wanted to do something while he could and enlisted. Not as an officer, even though he was well qualified to be one, just as an average enlisted man.

Second friend, went to uni, studied hard, did exceptionally well, got his degree with honours in "Performing Arts'. Has a fabulous singing voice. Promptly went out and became a bartender and bouncer, made much better money that way. Ended up running his own successful company in the legal field ("Attilla the Hun's School of Charm" - ask me if you're curious) and never once used his degree.

As for me, I've also worked in customer service for years and now the companies are asking for college degrees just to walk in their front doors. No real change in the job itself, but just to do the basic stuff, they want to see your degree. Why? Because it supposedly show you can learn and work. Of course. now they just "outsource" all the fucking jobs to other countries period, leaving hundreds of thousands of Americans and Canadians unemployed because the call centre work went off to India..... (Or Pakistan, or the Phillipines, or a few other south-east Asian countries.)    Our global economy at work... thrilling.
