Grettings A/all, Not sure if this is the best place to ask. No other discussion board seem appropriate (except perhaps subs). A bit related to previous thread about the use of the word "dear". I am faily new to online "social" websites and was wondering if the use of ;-) wink is too forward with first encounters online ... specifically here on collarme? In real life I wink a fair bit as a very subtle form of flirting or to acknowledge understanding. I do this even with people I don't know. When I use it in real life it is not intended as a come on. In real life it has never been a problem. I hope there are subs who will chime in with opinions also. Experiences/Opinions? Thanks.

I don't see much of that kind of thing here on these boards, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't be acceptable. Go ahead and use it, it'll set you apart. If anyone is offended by it, I'd say that's their problem.

Use it, if someone asks, explain what you meant, but most fo the time the emotes are not an issue in the least Hope you enjoy yourself in learning the new medium :D

I agree with you about how you (general) would use a wink in person. But a conversation online isn't quite like a conversation in person, so the "wink" here lacks the spontaneity that it would have in real life. So to me a text wink seems sort of...disingenuous (not quite the word I'm looking for, but it's late).

In real life I don’t trust anyone who winks at me. On line, I wouldn’t have any idea what it means.

I know people who use it to denote a playful, flirty attitude where an LOL wouldn't be appropriate.. as to if it's offensive, that depends on the words around it. so if the message I got was "Bitch ;)" I'd be offended, and immediately ignore it.... but if it was something along the lines of nice and respectful, then It would just add a bit of "spice" to the conversation... so long as it wasn't over done.

It's fine. I'd avoid some of the more sexualised smileys, but aside from that you don't need to worry. Generally, the wink smiley is used a bit differently online than a wink in real life. It's used to make clear a post isn't entirely serious in intention. Although, as onlyfreelycaged points out, an offensive comment doesn't cease to be so if you put a smiley after it.

Previously when I chat online, I used emoticons a lot but after browsing a few BDSM sites, I realised emoticons are not so well accepted. But anyway, its there for you, use it or not is your choice...
