I learned self-hypnosis & relaxation techniques in a group-therapy setting when I was 11 years old, & they have served me well over the decades. I've added to them, also. There's all kinds of options for learning to alter your own consciousness entirely on your own, without outside assists. In addition to self-hypnosis & relaxation techniques there's meditation & other more spiritual approaches -- chanting, singing, & all kinds of activities have been used for sacred mind-altering purposes . . . . . Yoga, for example, is full of this kind of stuff; so too is Buddhism . . . . . The things I do are all pretty simple, & it's mostly just a matter of practice, practice, practice . . . . . One of the most basic meditation methods is to count your breaths; count while you inhale, then count while you exhale. Focus on the act of breathing & the counting & clear your mind of everything else. Aim for quick, deep inhales with a short count, & long, slow exhales with a count higher than the inhale. It's a lot harder than it sounds, so start small, a coupla minutes in the morning & a couple at night, & work up from there, if you decide to try it . . .. . .
