Related to the exhibitionist photos thread, does anyone know of a web-host that is fine with BDSM/nude content and not too expensive? I want to make a personal webpage, not just photosharing, but most I have found have restrictions or charge $70-100 per month. Any ideas?

www.godaddy.com.

A basic set-up could be as low as $60/year. I'm pretty sure the GoDaddy folks wouldnt care what you put on the website.

I've used Network solutions for years an they've never given me any problems over content (provided I don't break any federal laws).  Hosting with them starts at about $10 a month and includes mail boxes, your own domain name, sub domain names yo can change, etc... all of which can be very handy to have.

As an FYI,

Be careful with BDSM Content it can have different laws.

Legal Content Rights also require Model Release forms and STRICT detail of legal right to content. If it is only going to be You and Your Partners that is usually fine however anytime you get into public Access you would be surprized how much you open yourself up.

I belive Stephan on this site knows a LOT about Adult Content you may want to get in contact with him however I cannot remember the exact spelling of his CM Handle.

All I know is that when you put something up online you are responsible for it and once you put it out there ANYONE can get it.

If you know some Web Design Tricks you can at very least stop people from stealing your content and reposting it by Making the Images Part of the Back Ground and Putting up Invisible Picture Crops above it this way it will look like an Image but if the Right click to save all they get is a Blank Screen.

Good Luck with your Endeavor.

To add another, verio.com.  For the most part, webhosting companies will point you to a very long list of specific requirements if you try to nail them for them just so they don't have to deal with it if it becomes a legal issue... but they generally don't care as long they aren't getting complaints and you aren't causing server stability issues.  If you ask about hosting for an adult site, they will often assume you are talking about a high traffic bandwidth intensive site and suggest higher plans capable of supporting it as well.

If you are hosting content & images/videos that are likely to be leeched, it's not a bad idea to go with a unix server and setup a .htaccess to limit where images can be pulled from, the .htaccess file is just a text file named ".htaccess".  An example .htaccess to prevent image leeching is below

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://yourdomain.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.yourdomain.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.collarchat.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.collarme.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/notforyou.gif [NC]
RewriteRule \.(gif|GIF|jpg|JPG)$ http://yourdomain.com/notforyou.gif [R]

Something like that in the site's root directory would make it so your .gif and .jpg files would only display on yourdomain.com www.yourdomain.com www.collarme.com and www.collarchat.com but www.leechingpornsite.com would just get a notforyou.gif instead of leeching your bandwidth.  This is a very good thing since it helps prevent you from getting a huge bill for bandwidth overages if you aren't going with a higher level plan.

Another thing to keep in mind when shopping for a webhosting account of this sort of thing, is to find out what your options with the host if you dramatically go over your bandwidth allotment.  Most will charge you some amount per meg/gig over the allotment they give you or have umlimited* bandwidth.  If they charge overages, find out if just upgrading to a plan that handles that amount of bandwidth is ok to avoid the overage fees.  If it's umlimited, find out what the catch is.

Typically unlimited bandwidth accounts fall into one of a few different possibilities.  The first and simplest is that there is some kind of fair share technology in place to ensure that any one site doesn't monopolize the bandwidth on that server/rack and you get contacted and told to upgrade because your site was turned off/will be turned off/is being throttled if you cause a problem.  Another is that they simply throttle heavy bandwidth users down so other sites are less impacted by it.  Generally, if you get unlimited bandwidth, expect there to be the possibility of a forced upgrade if you wind up with huge amounts of traffic.  In your case though it probably won't be an issue since huge amounts of bandwidth can usually be traced back to image leeching or similar and corrected through various ways (i.e. .htaccess restrictions).

You should probably go with a unix server rather than a windows server unless you need/want ASP.  Shared windows webservers are just fine and often more stable from a customer's point of view than Shared unix servers for various reasons, but unix servers are easier to lock down with things like .htaccess files and are more likely to have scripts you can drop in and run without much in the way of code modifications if you go looking for them.

Thank you for the advice. I am aware of model release forms etc as I am a fetish model myself, the plan is to do a site that I can refer potential photographers to so they can see a portfolio and also information for my pro-Switch work. There are no plans to have other models on the site.

Curious puppy - thank you for the code and information, very helpful and I appreciate it.

You can also password protect things fairly easily using .htaccess/.htpasswd files.  Unix servers can do this easily, windows servers are not so easy to do it with.  You can either make the files manually, find a script to edit them for you, or on some webhosts have a tool in the control panel that will let you set passwords for individual directories.

If its a site geared towards you and your friends then you can set up your own at  your own place.
Its not that expensive at all.... actually you can almost do it for free or with really old computer equipment.
As long as you have a static i.p. address from your ISP its fairly simple.

I use DreamHost.com. They have a fantastic history of reliability and customer support. They're quite inexpensive (and that's not taking into account nifty deals they often feature). They also deal with plenty of adult content websites (which is how I began with them).

If you're talking about using images of yourself and/or partners and close friends, you actually shouldn't have any problems at all. It's when you start hosting sexual content with other people that you may have possible issues with 2257 regulations (which is still not overwhelmingly likely as a small personal site).

Heck, if you don't mind some advertising on your page, there are even adult-content-friendly free hosts. Here's a list of those.

Release forms aren't nearly as important (and some would argue superfluous) compared to verification of age.

There would be no sexual content with other people, but some of the images are of solo masturbation and some are BDSM themes, hence the caution I am taking. Are they not considered sexual content then?

Of course they're considered sexual content. However, finding an adult-friendly host isn't quite as difficult a hunt as one would think. What you're talking about is essentially an online portfolio.

Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes a generally open web host may turn into a Bible thumping, hate anything sexual kind of business overnight. I maintained sites for a number of bdsm organizations over the years, and one bookstore in the scene that had nothing but bad luck in this area used to be hosted on one server that turned religious almost overnight and DEMANDED she take down her site IMMEDIATELY. They wouldn't deal with me or her over the phone in a friendly manner and were outright hostile. This was a company that had been hosting the site for seven years without a single problem.

Another site after that was fine with all types of content, and we had long conversations with them before we switched over to them. Then, out of nowhere, they got on this holier than thou attitude about how we were disgusting heathens who were destroying the world for good folk. Now, don't get me wrong because I might just be guilty of that, but it wasn't because of our bdsm bookstore site. Anyway, we had to literally find a new server overnight because they deleted all the content on the site at that moment without even a conversation. Thank god we had backups of everything, but they didn't care that they could have put a legitimate business out of business completely.

So, make sure you have copies of everything you might want to keep, and constantly be aware that when a company changes hands, anything can happen.
