I live in Iowa where to my astonishment and pride, gay marriages are now legal. Saturday I attended the wedding of friends of mine, two men who have loved each other and lived together for 18 years. The all male wedding party was made up of both gay and straight friends. I can’t even begin to describe my joy for them as they publicly pledged their love, placed rings on each other’s fingers, kissed and were presented to the world as spouses. These two men have always lived their lives without apology and have been active in this community as advocates and mentors for homosexual men and women. At the reception, one best man (there were 2) gave a toast that included these words: “If I had never met you two, I don’t know that I would be the person I am. If I had not met you, I probably would not be tolerant or accepting. But because you didn’t hide who you were, I am a better person, and I thank-you for that.” It was a fun and wonderful day and I just wanted to share!
