Using Twitter and Facebook to Find a Job

"Welcome to the new rules of the job hunt. Gone are the days of simply posting your résumé on CareerBuilder, e-mailing former colleagues and trolling company websites for open slots. These days, if you're serious about being hired, you really put your computer and PDA to work. That means getting word out on social sites like Facebook and MySpace, sending instant job-search updates via messaging feeds like Twitter, and meeting new people who might be able to lend a hand through Web-networking outfits like LinkedIn and Ryze."

I get more contracts from my page on prillo than from any resume

I have been teaching people stuff like this since MySpace Hit the Nerve Center.

I also teach people to Apply where ever you think you wanna work and stop looking for "Now Hiring" signs or "Want Ad's" because Mass Hiring is an End Game Process it is when the company has no choice but to hire someone and so the Salary has usually been dropped a dollar or two to accomodate for the lost wages it is going to take just to hire somoene.

That being said..... The best way to get a job.... MUFFINS!!!

You laugh but if you bring the secretary a Muffin after getting to know her when you ask for an application when you bring the application and your Resume back and you give her a Muffin I GUARANTEE your resume will be put on the top of the stack. I have used this method a few time and every time when I got into the interview the Interviewer always said, "The Secretary speaks Highly of you" Now you have a trigger in their head and chances are they will remember you because someone they know mentioned you specifically out of a sea of faceless names.

Trust me I know LOTS of tricks I have usually been hired for jobs I don't really qualify for.

I used LinkedIn. And not in the way it was supposed to be used!

In LinkedIn, you can only add someone if you know their email address. So let's say that my target is The Company. I would do a search for "@TheCompany.com" and would pull up some employees' email addresses. That would tell me if their email convention was firstname, [email protected], [email protected], or something else.

Once I cracked the code for their email addresses, I would search for people who worked there and ask to add them to my list of contacts. About half would agree... AND they had contacts who worked there. So I'd end up with dozens of contacts at the company. Any that worked in QA, Reliability, or Engineering I would contact and ask for a ten minute conversation about their workplace. In two or three weeks I would know stuff about the company that only an insider ought to know.

I get a lot of my photography work requests from myspace/facebook & recently twitter & its definitley a plus because its easier to stay in touch through them. I cant even remember the last time I was asked for a C.V. - has to be at least a year = )

I use LinkedIn, too. Be careful with your methodology; if 5 people reply that they don't know you - you're out.

I have a few friends who have consulting companies that use LinkedIn to set up in-person networking events and webinars. It works out great and truly does link people with jobs.
