clary sage

Fifteen hundred years ago, Padmasambhava, the Indian mystic who took Buddhism to Tibet, prophesized the challenging hardships that would afflict societies during the Kali Yuga. Among his many accurate predictions was that in this Dark Age, people would not be able to sleep.

Gone are the times when the only lights at night are the stars, moon and campfire, when the only sounds are of rain, streams, coyotes and night birds. Now, the vibration of city sounds and electromagnetic fields mingles with our over-stimulated nerves and unstable blood sugar to produce disturbing dreams and poor-quality sleep. An epidemic of insomnia and its associated symptoms of depression and anxiety afflict a large percentage of the population, and millions of people are addicted to toxic medications for treating these problems.

From the quiet of the high mountains of the Mediterranean hillsides comes a plant with beautiful lavender-pink flowers resembling heart-shaped swans, offering its aromatic oil as an antidote to the suffering of agitated fatigue. Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) received its Latin name from the word clarus, meaning clear. The herb was once called Clear Eye, because a mucilaginous wash made from its seeds was used to cleanse and brighten the eyes. Now we can think of the essential oil from this herb as one that gives us clear eyes upon awakening from peaceful sleep and tranquil dreams.

Clary sage should not be confused with its relatives from the deserts of the Southwest. Most sages, such as white sage, which is used for ceremonial incense and smudging, have stimulating and energizing effects, while clary sage produces rejuvenation as a result of its calmative, antispasmodic and relaxing powers. Clary's effects can be understood by examining its somewhat unusual chemical composition: along with lavender, it is one of only a few essential oils with a high percentage of esters - gentle bioactive molecules with anti-inflammatory, endocrine-balancing and nervous system-restoring properties. The chemical similarity with lavender makes these two oils an excellent therapeutic combination.

Clary sage essential oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a unique aroma. Sweet and herbaceous, it is soft with a bittersweet undertone. It has a persistence that perfumers describe as tobacco-like, balsamic, or tea-like. Its aroma has also been compared to rockrose and Moroccan chamomile. Clary sage has a very characteristic and unmistakable aroma, yet it would be difficult for someone other than a trained nose to accurately describe its multi-layered, wine-like complexities. For those who wake clear-eyed after a night of refreshing sleep and healing dreams, it is the aroma of contentment.

Clary sage loves to grow in the bright open sunshine; yet ironically, it works to heal the dark depths of our unconscious mind. Passing beyond the barriers of habitual thoughts that keep us tossing and turning when we should be slumbering, its mysterious fragrance wafts from the pillow into the hidden recesses of the brain, promoting deep sleep and vivid dreams. Even though colorful dreams may fill the inner night sky, we wake refreshed, with our energy rejuvenated. Our spirit finds refreshment in the play of astral freedom, beyond the confining concerns of this world.

Science now confirms what people have known about clary sage for centuries. A recent study conducted by the nursing department of a Korean university found that atmospheric diffusing of clary sage and lavender helped nursing students decrease their anxiety and stress. The conclusion of the study: Aroma inhalation could be a very effective stress management method. The report went on to state that, Nursing educators should play an important role in contributing to college students physical and psychological health by helping enhance their recognition of stress management and effectively relieving their stress using essential oils. Imagine the positive effects throughout society if stress-reducing fragrances like clary sage were used not just in occasional medical studies, but in every school, nursing home and office.

If you are one of the many people who are finding themselves increasingly sensitive and more easily overwhelmed by stressful circumstances, sprinkle a few drops of clary oil in the bath and on the pillow before sleep; it is a renowned tonic that increases physical and psychological strength. By relaxing tension and supporting vitality, it boosts confidence, lifts fatigue, calms anxiety and panic, and overcomes depression. And a small amount in a diffuser will help pacify hyperactive children.

What could be more precious in this age of mental unrest than an essence that produces euphoric elevation of the spirit while simultaneously bringing tranquil balance to the emotions?

I'll just say that I totally believe in some of the non-traditional/holistic remedies{especially when it comes to cranial sacral, reiki, acupuncture/pressure and other types of energy work}, but when it comes to insomnia, I'll go with a tall glass of Cabernet or a few shots Gentleman Jack instead - Works every time ; }

Lavendar oil does seem to help. Have not heard of clary sage...but, may work into it. Ambien works well...as does xanax. Oh, and a shot of butterycrown never hurt either!

(butterscotch schnapps and Crown Royal....or to make it even better...add a touch of Baileys! mmm...)

Hmm, the best thing I have found for insomnia is a nice glass of chamiole tea, with honey, some lavendar incense, and deep meditation. Works every single time. I won't touch RX prescriptions for something like this.

I was introduced to Clary Sage a few years ago when my ex Master and I split. A girlfriend of mine and her Master were very much into essential oils, lotions and aromatherapy. He made me a lotion to help relax me and the main ingredient was Clary Sage with some Lavender and a few other things. It worked wonderfully but I do suggest a bit of caution with quantity. The first batch they mixed me had to be diluted a bit because the Clary Sage had a bit of an intoxicating effect and caused some mild dizziness. It really is rather potent stuff and to be honest I was a bit skeptical when it was first given to me, but I am a believer now.

Its not traditional aromatherapy but it is therapy which usually cures insomnia for me when I'm dig tired and cant sleep........ :

Tale one naked kajira and have her remove any clothing you are wearing. Lay on your back on the bed and apply the mouth of said kajira to your cock (if you are a man) and have her continue doing wonderous things to you untill you orgasm one dozen times and collaps or untill you go to sleep.

Just a note here for those of you who may have tried (or thought about trying) Melatonin.

The dose that the "health food" industry has chosen (these people are every bit as suspect as the "evil pharmaceutical corporations" when it comes to doing irresponsible and stupid marketing) is 3 mg. If you do some research, you'll find that MIT among other places has determined that dose is WAY too big. They had good results with 1/10th of that!

From personal experience, i'd suggest breaking the pill into quarters and trying that. Also: Stay away from bright lights before bedtime! (And the bad news insomniacs, is that may mean a computer screen two feet from your eyes as well!) Light shuts down melatonin production very effectively.

A scent is a scent. If it smells nice, it can be whatever you want it be. It's all psychological. If I told you Lavender was calming, you would smell it with the mind set of already being calm. If I said it would cause sexual arousal, it would put into a horney state of mind. If I said this smell would increase energy, you would begin to work harder/exercise more. It's all mental. As long as it's not a repulsive smell it can be whatever you want it to be for you. An ancient placebo that's normally not bad to have around.
