Why do they do it?  I mean, one day they are happily making ice cubes that drop blissful and perfect in form and function...the next the cubes are shattered, fractured and half of it stays in the damn tray...

WHY ICE CUBE TRAY?!!  WHY?!!!

Was it something I said??

Either pour a little warm water over the tray to loosen them up or stick them in the microwave for 5 seconds to do the same.  It's what I do.  Usually they do what your describing because you over filled the tray.

I'm afraid that the worst has yet to come Otter. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but we can't forget the cookie conspiracy......one is never ever enough and the next a person knows id the package is empty, a person usually has no memory of eating them all! muhahahahahaha

Of course it is William Shatner's fault it all goes back to when he played on TJ Hooker, couple that with the fact that he is Canadian and you KNOW its his fault. All that snow and maple syrup does effect the mind after awhile.
