This came from my nephew, aged 17. I can't understand why he and his pals were almost vomiting with laughter at it. I'm feeling old as a result and need to be shown why it's funny. Thank you for any assistance. The joke goes: Why do women wear make-up and perfume? Because they'd be ugly and smelly otherwise.

Kind of a sad commentary that their view is beauty is only found by hiding what is natural and acceptability is found in the artificial.

FR to All: Thank you. What made me scratch my head was the feeling that I just wasn't "in tune" with the subtleties of gender relations amongst the Youth of Today any more. I wondered whether this joke hinted at a new sort 'political correctness' that they felt they were defying in some very rebellious way. Who knows? The one thing of which I'm certain, however, is that my nephew is indeed a plonker.

I wouldn't worry too much. I know I was pretty much only thinking of women and sex when I was 17. Come to think about it, I still dream of beautiful women and sex. I', a bit older than 17 now. Dragon

Here I was thinking it was because they've not had a serious bout of inebriation and found out the next morning what ugly and smelly really is.

Actually its an old British Joke. A Rudie and a Gentleman are sharing a meal and discussing things. The beatnick is trying to be quizzial while also being exostential. "Oy! you ever wonder why there are so many stars Gov?" "Because Space is Infinite and Cosmic expance generates massive amounts of energy which result in swirling balls of heat called Stars... Infinite Space... Many Stars." "Oy! so why then do you think there are lots of planets and only this one's got people then?" "Because of all the things that occured millions and billions of years ago the setting was just right to support life and other planets which were either too close or too far away don't allow for that." "Oy! so why do you think there are Blokes and Birds then?" "Because we are a species that reproduces and if we don't have a male and female of a species then we cannot reproduce." "Oy! so why do you think Birds wear make-up and perfume and stuff?" "Because they are Ugly and the Smell Funny" * All of this is said with the British Gentleman reading froma paper and said with no emotion whatso ever and answered without a moments hesitation* I have ALWAYS loved that joke.
