DarkSteven -> Something that's pissed me off for a while. (6/13/2009 5:48:55 AM)

I've worked in defense before.  And when I did, the government did background checks on me. For an SSI clearance or a Q clearance, they check where the applicant lived for the past fifteen years.  They interview ex-neighbors and ex-coworkers.

The idea is that if you have weaknesses that show that you could be susceptible to bribes or blackmail, then you shouldn't be in a position where you have access to classified info.  Issues with overspending, drug/alcohol use, secret affairs.  I have no issues with that.

What I DO have issues with is that Congresspeople and Senators have access to info MUCH more sensitive than I did.  With NO background check first.

There have been plenty of people in the defense industry who got jailed for selling secrets to foreign powers.  I have NEVER heard of a Congressperson/Senator investigated for this.  And they are able to meet with foreign diplomats whenever they want to.  Hell, they can even write off the expenses to fly over there.

I'd love to see all candidates go through a background check and drug check.  If they fail - they're out of the election.  We'd also get a better quality of government.  They'd have higher ethics AND they'd know what getting a job in the real world entails.

In theory yes.

But look at the waste of paper and bandwidth the last election for President generated what with rumour and accusations of this and that regarding the two final candidates, let alone the mess when selecting those final two from a field only slightly larger.

Then imagine it multiplied up to cover everyone running for the Congress.

And then factor in that there doesnt have to be any truth to any accusation or rumour, and that some are very good at throwing enough such that some will stick.....

It could all be done behind closed doors of course (and I'm sure it does anyway, well before selection for candidacy), but I get the impression that if it were made a requirement openly, then the public would have a right to know.

Actually, a psychological study for mental fitness for office would be in order too :)

That's part of the "problem" of a free society...we trust until we are shown not to trust.   And why "real" journalists are so important to our nation.

Politicians get away with waaaaaay the hell too much.  You are absolutely right in what You think is in order!

I think that two things happened that need addressing:

1) They should not be exempted from any laws they pass on other citizens.
2) Term limits.  If it is good enough for the President to have term limits, then it is good enough for Congress Critters to have term limits.

Come the revolution....politicians, lawyers and MBAs against the wall first...

There are a few holes in that analogy. All of that presidential vetting is done in and by the American press - hardly an objective or bi-partisan group. Add to that the fact that there are far more than 535 openings in the defense industry and they manage to check them out. I think DarkSteven's suggestion is not insurmountable. As far as public access to the information goes if the law says it can be made publec, then so be it. I think it's a valid complaint.

Steven, I agree. And, I don't think senators or congressmen should be flying to foreign countries in any official capacity for many reasons.

What would you do about Obama, then. He couldnt possibly get a security clearance under normal standards.

Why not?

He has drug use in the past, but not currently.
He has never shown any problems handling money.
He has never been charged of cheating on Michelle.

What grounds would he be denied under?

Past associations with known terrorists for one.

His close, twenty year association with the radical racist group at Jeremiah Wright's Trinity Church, for another.

And here it all comes..... yes, it would certainly be a golden age for suppliers of ink and paper to the newspapers and similarly for aspiring political journalists and local/state cable stations on radio and TV, although the internet would likely collapse under the strain (my goodness, the character assassination of would be members of Congress might even push porn to second place).

However all this additional economic activity would be more than cancelled out by the fact that in order to keep up with the latest rumours and innuendos about local candidates, the entire electorate would have to stay off work as part of their democratic duty to make an informed choice.

Thing is, with effective investigative journalism in place, no party in its right mind is going to so much as look at someone for selection if there is anything dodgy in their past that can be proven against them. And even then, the same mechanism goes after those who stand out for additional scrutiny. If some are getting into and remaining in Congress who ought not be there, then one must look at why they are not being subjected to such additional scrutiny by a media ever hungry for the next scandal in normal circumstances.

You would deny a voice in government to all of us who can't get a clearance?  Sounds like taxation without representation to me, Steve.  (How do they feel about tendencies towards sexual deviancy?)

Pre-selected candidates?  Isn't that how they do it in Iran?

      Count me out.

FR

Clueless I swear. Maybe it is different in other countries but here they pick people WITH skeletons in the closet.

"Mr. Clinton, I see here you have a loose end down in Arkansas".

"Mr. Clinton, we don't like your criticism of Israel's nuclear capabilities, that's why we sent Monica" .

Mr Trafficant, you better shutup about those pork projects or else" . Guess what what else was ? Am I the only one who really knows what happened to him ?

Nobody gets into high politics here without stepping on some toes, they all have enemies somewhere, just waiting for the right time to reveal, which comes when a politician will not play ball with those who are really in power.

Try to debate this and all I have to do is pull out the public records. Many many things this government does are actually treasonous or borderline treasonous. Why ? What impels them to do so ? Big money, big money with strings attached.

Now do ya unnerstan how we got this fucked up ? How many people were against free trade ? Did it pass ? The representatives passed it. They surely do not represent us. The fact is that big money and coersion run this government, it is plain and easy to see.

If you have any ideas on how to fix this without a full blown revolution I am all ears.

One last point I will make, a bit tertiary more than anything but applies. In younger days I used to love the corrupt government. A simple stack of money was a get out of jail free card, and I as well as others have used it more than once. It was great, and this was more than a cop looking the other way when you park in the wrong place, we are talking felony warrants that simply disappear. Nowadays I couldn't buy my way out of a parking ticket. Other people have the power now. But I admit, when I had it I liked it. Actually I can buy my way out of some things now, but that entails finding THE RIGHT lawyer. It used to be just a trip to go see Frank.

Here's the thing:
If there's anything in a politician's background, you can be fairly sure it WILL be exposed during the election cycle. Especially in this tabloid-hungy culture we live in. That IS the pre-employment screening, after all.

So, OP, how did you hoodwink the people investigating you, so you could have your clearance? (Since you are obviously a kinky pervert, and could be blackmailed or turned by "The Other Side?"

Termyn8or -> RE: Something that's pissed me off for a while. (6/23/2009 11:50:53 AM)

Mars, leave it to you to come up with something like that. I would have to differ. In some cases we may be talking apples and ornages, but there is still alot we don't know about Clinton's riegn in Arkansas, Bush's reign in Texas and a few other things. I am sure plenty of people have been cutup, shutup or put away somewhere.

Someone mentioned chosen candidates in where, Iran ? You don't think we have that here ? Run for President and get back to me. Believe me, every politician can be blackmailed, and are in a way just about every day. The evidence is in the news every day. They have never worked for us, and with more thought I have come to the conclusion that perhap even the founding Fathers of this nation were not working for us either. With complete and intense study of their writings and so forth, it seems that their ideals may not have been one hundred percent altruistic.

What people fail to see is that all of this is simply class warfare. In a bundle, it boils down to this - the upper class wants more and more, while the lower class tries to give less and less. Alliance between counries are not treaties based upon friendliness of the peoples. They are trade agreements to take away the wealth that the working Man creates. It really is a scam, and could be called a conspiracy except for one thing. When the conspirators win, it is called cooperation.

When you have a tight knit group of rich people who cooperate to get richer and gain more power, it is a conspiracy, of that there is not a doubt. The conspiracy becomes a cooperative if the plan works.

Until you understand that you will understand very little about how the world really works, and to put it quaintly, be unable to see the trees because of the forest. These are the life and times in which we were raised, it is what we are used to. If you could view it with a blank slate you would see it very differently.

Futures, that amounts to buying up resources people need and storing them so that when people get desperate the commodity can be sold at a totally unearned profit. Should be a capital offense.

Rich engaging in currency speculation as they destroy the US economy, should be considered treason.

Large companies moving offshore with lucrative US contracts in hand (Halliburton>Dubai I.E.), absolutely a capital offense.

Selling us lies to go to war when it was not necessary, execution is too good. I would rather hang around with Hitler, Chairman Mao, or that crazy guy in Iran than Bush. Actually that crazy guy in Iran doesn't seem so crazy sometimes huh ?

A strong defense would be fine, but on purpose or not they have failed. If someone hits us with ICBMs eventually the Pres has to say "Wher the fuck are all these missiles coming from ?", then a corporal points it out on a map, then the Pres says "Well bomb there then, we can't be wasting our missiles all day long".

There it is folks, a superior defense plan that could come form a couple of dudes burning a bit of mother nature eating Honeyhut icecream (no sugar added). Stoners could do a better job.

To the OP : You wanna talk abouit pissed. Let's. In the forties the US was one of the militarily strongest nations in the world. Now we can set aside all the rumour, innuendo and even fact about FDR knowing about Pearl harbor in advance. Let's just forget all that for a minute and concentrate on Fox type news and things that we can agree upon.

Now OK it was a surprise attack, but wait, where did those planes come from ? Wasn't there a few thousand miles over something known as the Atlantic ocean involved somehow. So in strict sheepleness I am ashamed to say that despite the best efforts of the bestest and the mostest of all nations on the Earth, the best we could do is to watch one of our better facilities be bombed into dust.

Assuming all that is true, and hearing people bitch about mediocraty, I say hell, give me mediocraty, it's got to be better than what we have. And to top it off half of the people, supposed leaders of unfriendly nations that we depose and execute at will ? HALF OF THEM WE HELPED GET INTO POWER !

Fuck, unless there is a conspiracy I would give my left leg for some mediocraty about now. I mean if that's the best we can do we are not quite all we are cracked up to be. To say the least.

Timely post.   My usual rant- and obstinate- colorful and abstract, dissertation just got received by my state reps office.

Figure all my posts for the last 6 months condensed into a 20 minute phone call and a follow up email.

I can only guess the stir I caused.       My rep is sort of old, he IS very good BTW.   Now is the time to clue him in.   Like they know me- and when I dropped in  Jane Doe- says you don't stop by in a long time-where have you been!!!

Well- as of today- I stopped by.

So now we wait to see if I am banned from there - or what.

I get the impression the staff clerk was intently tuned in.     ....they sent the district a questionnaire.      So- that is what triggered this.

...consider my posts since Bear Stearns.   Well- now- is the time- the local officials are getting my dissertation.

So if I end up in the slammer- send a cake with a file in it.

pahunkboy -> RE: Something that's pissed me off for a while. (6/23/2009 12:55:50 PM)

Term- the one plane- did not fly on 9-11.    I was going to post it- but false flag events- are too serious for "random stupidity" - which is where CM classifies truther material to be posted.    (I am not complaining about CM.  There is a TOS and it is a free site- so one has to dance with the one who brought you)
