Hi, Kali,

Two of my friends had that stomach stapling thing back in the early 90's.  I had no idea, since they had both eaten their way out of it...  a thing that I had NO idea could happen.  I know that the lap band thing is way different, but it's still a big body change, and will mean a bigger lifestyle change than actually changing your food habits.   Will it work?  Short term, absolutely.  Long term?  It's a big maybe.

I remember being a thin, fit person.  I remember changing careers, going on boatloads of "may cause weight gain" meds (YAY prednisone!), dealing with family and my own illnesses,  and finding myself on the edge of being a plus size.  I know, compared to my 400 pound friend that is nothing, but I look at myself and am utterly disgusted, IN SPITE of the 20 pounds I took off earlier this year.  Am I still a hot chick?  Yep.  Do my friends love me?  Yep.  But  I do not feel like MYSELF.  I understand wanting to change.

Write down every possible question.  Ask to talk to folks who have had the procedure, preferably those that are a year into it.  There is bound to be a support group of some kind.  Oh, and talk to that guy who follows you around.  I know that he loves you and supports you, but if one person in the household is committed to a major lifestyle change, EVERYONE has to be in on the deal.  This is going to be tough on him, too---and he has to understand that this is yes, another speed bump, not a quick fix.

GOOD LUCK!!  You know we love you and support you out here in the world of imaginary friends!!

Auntie Hib

A woman I worked with had the stapling surgery......she came back after about 6 weeks almost 100 pounds lighter....she topped out at over 400.  She was happy with the surgery and the results, her health was being seriously affected, everything from her diabetes to not being able to walk  even the distance from the car to our building....but did it make her a better person for it?  Nope, she was still miserable.  Too bad they couldn't fix her personality......but she thought the surgery would make her life better in every way.

I'm with the bunch who say GO to the appointment, ask every question you have, and get answers, not stalling.  Talk to others that have had the surgery.  More often than not, we hear the horror stories, it's the successful surgeries that no one talks about.  Check into some of the options mentioned here.....I've thought about those, except I can't stand or drink anything milky, and that's all those things are.  If they had the same results with like a juice type concoction, I'd be right there!

Whatever decision you make, it has to be one that's right for YOU!  Don't  worry about what anyone else thinks.....this is all about you!  Good luck with whatever decision you make.....take care of you!

Kalista...my feeling is you will not regret going to the appt, but you might regret it if you do not go. Don't set yourself up to look back negatively in retrospect.

Your uncertainty right now is because of a lack of information. Get your questions answered and the decision will come to you.

Kali, I know two ladies that have had the procedure. One loves it, and is grateful she chose it. The other got sick from it, and had to have it removed.

You just have to decide how important it is to you, to lose weight. If it's important enough to take the risk, then go for it, but for what it's worth, I picked the "it's about making peace with yourself" selection in the poll.

I think that you should go to the appointment tomarrow.  Before you go, make a list of your questions and concerns and TALK to them about it.  Make the list and take it with you so that you do not forget any of them why you are there.  You still have time to think about the surgery.  They are not going to do it tomarrow, so. . .no. . . the decision to have it does not need to be made by tomarrow, only the decision to GO TO YOUR APPOINTMENT.

If you can, take your Mr. Man with you or a friend.  Even if they just wait outside for you, you will have extra support.

I do think that the lap band surgery is a good idea for you.  Will it magically make you feel better about your body?  Probably not.  Will it ease your mind some?  Possibly.  Will it improve your over-all health?  Almost a definate.

Remember!  You are worth this.  You are worth the love you recieve.  You are a person of worth.

It's never too late while you're breathing.

This is good advice. My daughter is considering a lapband surgery as she has been unable to lose weight from many attempts. Knowing her story and struggles I am in full support for her doing this. Risks are less with a lapband as opposed to staples. Go to the appointment, ask the questions, get the answers, put your anxiety aside for a bit.

This one hits very close to home for me.

I am now at the point where I know something must be done.  I have exhausted everything I can, and am now on to my final step before giving into surgery.  My cardiologist referred me over for the Optifast program at my local hospital.  It's actually something a lot of people looking into surgery do in order to lose weight and shrink the liver.  It's a long program starting with a 12 week supplement only boost, after that I believe it's 8 weeks of adding food in, then a the rest of it they help you with what you need to eat and how to avoid temptations.  There are meetings every week, plus a dr see's you on a regular basis, and bloodwork so they keep an eye on everything.  It not only gives you the tools to learn how to eat again, but it helps you get there.  It might be something to check into as many insurance programs cover it.

.

This is an OLD diet that doesn't work. I almost went on this and my doctor said no way. Just like Slimfast. Just someone in a white coat telling you to drink this...

I know 5 people who had their stomach stapled and 4 still gained weight after couple years. They're not happy.
The 5th person is still skinny only because she is sickly.

Kali I know there are pros and cons on having a lap band.

I know of only one firend that had it done and while its taken time, its made a huge world of difference in a good way, her health has improved, she doesnt have as much pressure on her bad back, and its posted her self esteem alot.  She only eats what she can hold, and if she goes a wee bit over it does cause her to lose it. So she is careful..  The change in her is astounding.

I cna ony speek for her and its been a success.  I do realize that this isnt true of others.  But she has followed her rules for by a tee.

Unltimately its your choice, be sure and do a pro and con list and see which shows the hghter benefits.

I wish you luck in whateve decision you make.  I do know that weight loss does have good medical benefits. I would take that avenue in more prestective than just losing weight for self esteem sake.

I wish you look and prayers in whatever decision you make and will be happy to support you in that decision. If by any chance you would like a first hand view of someone who found it successful, let me and and perhaps I can arrange for you to talk to my friend who did have success.
She could give you to down and dirty and what happens and how it will change you eating habits.

Im pulling for you in either way...good luck and dont let the surgeoun rush you into a fast decision.

Actually there is a lot more to it than that.  I will have classes every week that I attend while on the program and can also attend at any time I feel like I need a boost to be around people that struggle with food.  I will meet with a nutritionist, an exercise specialist, a therapist, group therapy sessions, I will have bloodwork to keep up with my health, and meet with a dr at intervals throughout the program.

It is a drastic thing, the first 8 weeks are supplement only.  The thing is, how much more drastic is having someone cut into my body and either take something out or put something in?  That is the next step if something isn't done soon, and not one that I am really wanting to take.

My cardiologist sent me to this program, they have had some great results with it.  I have also talked to several people that don't even have anything to do with it, yet work in the medical industry including the hospital where I am going.

I know that this is a total life change, but that's exactly what I need.  I need that time away from food, away from having to worry about everything I eat, I want the structure of grabbing one of my 6 shakes a day and not having to worry for a couple of months.  After that they show you how to add meals, so you slowly go back to bringing food into your life.  They even have outings to restaurants so you can learn how to enjoy going out with friends and still keep the weight off.

This might not be the thing for everyone, but it's the thing for me and many others.  It's an option out there for people that have a lot of weight to lose.  It's like anything else though, if you don't make the commitment, it won't work.

Also a link for you.

www.obesityhelp.com   They talk about all of the procedures on there, you can read the good, bad, and sometimes ugly side of a few different ones.

Good luck, Sleazybutterfly!  My mom and I did that years ago.  It worked for awhile... but nothing stands against steroids, evidently!
