Darias -> Hollywood Accents that make you want to cry (6/14/2009 3:36:42 PM)

i just sat through the  "epic " movie far and away ( nicole kidman and tom cruise ) and as the end credits rolled i felt like literally crying. a dodgier irish accent ive never heard , in fairness to nicole in parts she tried be jaysus cruise learn to act will ya

i swear the man got his voice lessons from the lucky charms comercials .

so first i want to ask. is that how ya`ll over the pond think we sound here on the emerald isle ? or is it just Mr cruise whos thus impaired

the second thing i want to ask is , can anyone think of other movies with accents that made them want to cry ?

Darias

Nah we over here are pretty well versed in the various Irish dialects and accents.  Another one that made me cringe was Dick VanDyke and his cockney accent in Mary Poppins. I was embarassed for him.

anything where they're supposed to have an aussie accent (nicole kidman doesn't have a problem with that one). often it sounds like a really dodgy cockney accent. makes me cringe and i'm not native.

conversely, when anyone over here tries to sound american. same cringe.

Yep anyone who isn't an Aussie sounds awful when they try to put on the accent - Mick Jagger in that Ned Kelly movie and Meryl Streep in Evil Angels

Olivier Martinez in SWAT... He has that gorgeous French accent in real life and he was going for Italian.  Come on!

Level -> RE: Hollywood Accents that make you want to cry (6/15/2009 4:08:53 AM)

Arnold shouting "it's a tumah!!!"

Oh wait, that's his real accent....

MadAxeman -> RE: Hollywood Accents that make you want to cry (6/15/2009 4:13:06 AM)

Keanu Reeves doing an English gent (Johnathan Harker) in Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula.

SavageFaerie -> RE: Hollywood Accents that make you want to cry (6/15/2009 4:20:37 AM)

Hell I cringe when Tom Cruise uses his real voice.....that just one actor I cant stand.

Now Russel Crowe pulls off the aussie..oh wait he is one.

While I love old movies, especially black and white, they didnt even try to learn the accents.  Thinking...they do it now.
Kirsten Dunset  did not even come close to pulling off her accent, I highly doubt someone from Austria sounds like that.

Yeah ... Keanu did a much better beach bum turned cop in Speed. "Okay .. relax. We're just two cool dudes taking the bus."

WHO wrote that line??

lol to Level! Oh how I have missed you!

From what I heard, Nicole and Tom spent almost a year in Ireland, staying with an irish family, trying to learn the accents.

What I hate, is the southern accents that these (Generic) actors use in movies. OMG, do we REALLY sound that hokey?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Hollywood Accents that make you want to cry (6/15/2009 8:22:58 AM)

Yes, you really sound that hokey!  [:D]

Truly, MOST actors across the pond trying to do an American accent---eeeh!  Purely sad.

I see the two lovelies beat me to it. Uggggghhhhhh, it's just atrocious to hear someone trying to sound "Aussie".  Of course, now, I just have a muddled whatever accent. When I got to Australia, friends said  I sounded funny and beat on me to make sure I sounded "right". Got back to the states and everyone said I sounded "funny" so had even more loving, generous friends beat on me to make me sound "right".  [8|]   I couldn't win......

I can't flush out of my head the image of Tony Curtis saying, "Yondah lies da castle of my faddah" in... what was it... "The Black Shield Of Farnsworth," or something like that?

lighthearted -> RE: Hollywood Accents that make you want to cry (6/15/2009 11:17:24 AM)

ugh, Kevin Costner in "Robin Hood"...I think he gave it up 1/2 way through the movie.
and, Kevin Costner in "JFK"...he doesn't do American accents any better.

As someone whom has spent a real Bad Night in Bad Bobs, in Dublin, I salute the OP, both for the topic and the first expression of his opinion on said topic in a perfect exemplar of  "The Craic".

Then again I'm a big fan of the Tain Bo Cuailgne and the Lebhor Gabhala N' Erenn so we shan't be surprised.

Let the flow of this thread be decided by Manannan Mac Lir as opposed to any anglicized "Saint" (such as Aengus Mac Ogh).

That being said as a proem, I must first state that Tommy Timorous of on a Cruise for the Closeted first offended with false and fiendishly fallow approximation of accent most deplorable in Legend.

For which NO alien influence, or influence OVER alien influences, will ever allow him to escape his come-uppance.

Tome, we may at times respect the cock, but never the cock-weasel.

Methinks, by the way, his inability to even moderately ape a Gaelic trill might stem from the fact that we all knoiw he has more in Common with Oscar Wilde than Peter O'Toole.

And you can take that straight to Hibernia Beach in San Francisco.

If i have to see Paris Hilton's bush again... I'll cry? [:D]

Scotty on Star Trek.  For that matter, all TOS folks.

Except Leonard Nimoy.  He is perfect.

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Hollywood Accents that make you want to cry (6/22/2009 5:58:11 AM)

Until tonight, I had blissfully blocked that twat-travesty from my recollection.

dammit.

And hey, sugargirl, just be thankful Paris Hilton's Bush doen't speak.  Just IMAGINE the accent THAT swampy chernobyl of chocho would have.
