I know this is going to sound totally and completely ignorant but what is the use of a harness? I've googled pictures of them and I seem to mostly find gay leather men harnesses and female bra harnesses. Is there a point to them other than aesthetics? I mean some look cool but what are they for? Suspension, cuffing someones wrists to them, enforcing weird possitions, what? I mean I can imagine what you can do with leather straps and buckles but i haven't seen any pic of it. Gah! confused!

well, they are for a look ofcourse, also, if you got a lot of o rings on it, you can attach other things, some you can attach internal or external dildos, plugs and etc, add on nipple clamps and weights, etc. i believe mainly, they are more or less for a look, and to feel like your body is bound by something

Along with what's already been said, a rope harness is also a work of art. It looks pretty - the diamond shapes, the knots. The constriction of your body, the placement of the knots - that's what makes it fun.

I like to use them because they make the wearer feel restrained in some way. Also depending on the style there are movements restritions... 1st Girl Phoenix

oh ok, I think i get it. They are more for the sub then the dom, for feelings of bondage, control, and occationally as balletbob said used to hold stuff in. Their use for puppy and pony play i hadn't thought of, not really down my alley so the thought never occured to me. Interesting idea though. Is a saddle then counted as a harness of sorts? Can you combine them with other bdsm things such as suspension (i did abseiling for a few years so i have a body harness somewhere at home, would that count as the same thing?) or could you combine it with say a corset ect... just curious about the possibilities. kass ps. thanks for the informative replies!

oh and i forgot, rope harnesses.... basically an art. I find it hard to lump rope into the harness category! There is too much room to move and create!

That quite depends on how you apply the ropes I'd say. Rope can be very strict (and not all rope harnesses are "art", but that's another matter).
