Does IT create stress in the workplace? Only if you're an IT technician or you have a lower IQ than the bacteria in cheese.
Seriously, try doing your job without any IT involvement, then you'd know stress.

There are means of making the IT in your life more stress free.

First of all, learn the keyboard shortcuts for the tasks you perform regularly. The keys don't move around the screen like the icons you use with the mouse. The mouse has to be moved about the screen, the shortcuts don't.
Get a dual screen system, you can see more of your work at the same time.
Upgrade the machine, you'd be surprised what an extra couple of Gig of RAM can do for your office PC.

If you're the sort of person who has to call someone in to your office to ask "What happens if I click Send on an e-mail", or "show me again how I copy files from here to there" then seriously consider if you're intelligent enough to work on a PC. (Yes, I was asked this in my last job)

By far, the best advice to relieve stress at work is to get a decent manager.

The internet is merely a tool of "The Boss", RE "The Company".

Statistically, according to clinical definitions of sociopathic behaviour, more bosses are sociopathic than ever before (since sociopathy has been actively rewarded and encouraged in the exec world since the mid-80's) and thus so is the "tandem personae" of corporations that people work for.

IT is just the tool of these nutless wackjobs masquerading as "Type A"'s

They ARE type a's, a for asshole. But they were assholes with faxes, and typed memos, and mimeographs. Like stalkers whom used landlines and payphones, they merely have new ways to add to the stress, but the tools are not to blame. The scissors that took Bobbit's Wee Widdle Winkee Bobbit were not to blame, the brain weilding them were.

In some ways IT is lessening stress because these moronic wannabe type a's are too narcissistic to realize they're too dumb to avoid leaving digital "paper trails" of their bullshit. Particularly in politics.

And frankly, I bet that Twitter, as much as I despise its intended/original demographic, relieved a lot of stress for the folks with family in the seats of the Plane that landed in the Hudson.

We don't really know what stress is today... we cry and moan about how bad we have it when life is not nearly as hard as it was for our previous generations.

How many times in school did you practice hiding your head in a hall… not for a tornado but in case there was a nuclear war?

Remember there was a time before penicillin when a boil could kill you... if your crops failed you did not just get another job you starved... as a child you may have worked 6 days a week 12 hours a day in a sweltering factory for pennies.

How many times did you see your child die a horrible death from an illness that could be cured in a few days today with a magic pill?

I could go on and on but my point is made I think. We are not stressed …we are spoiled and privileged brats.
