First up I'm not particularly interested in the politics of what's happening in Iran, I'm just interested in what people think about Twitter's involvement.
Do you think it's making a difference to what's happening in the country? Do you think that people outside of Iran would be as motivated to act/react if they weren't getting such up to the minute reports on what's happening? Do you actually care?

Alternatively; Any other opinions on microblogging? Thoughts about the need to create new words and phrases to describe what's basically a virtual equivalent to standing on a busy street corner and shouting, but in a way that makes it seem really cool?

Oooo, easy answers... all the same! No, No, and No!

My opinion is it's a great tool in keeping up with people. While I do follow some politicals, some GLBT specifics, and some news peeps, I use tweetdeck so that I don't have to read it. I use it to see what my friends are doing (since almost all of us update by text, and online, whenever we're doing something interesting, or have an excellently funny joke), and I use it for 'stealthy snark' techniques. Someone being stupid that I need to be nice and accomodating to? I can text a quick message to twitter "If this lady had any more air in her head she'd be a balloon' and boom, I feel better.

In a lot of ways, Twitter, Facebook, et al, are really just the 21st century versions of CB radio... Lots of activity, lots of things being said, but not much of importance. Very low signal to noise ratio...

Except...

They ARE proving their worth in a time of crisis like this. In a way, they become a cyber version of Paul Revere, allowing important information to be spread, when the Iranian government is desperately trying to take what little voice its people do have! I think it's great the Twitter and facebook both have worked to keep the lines of communication open during these demonstrations. It helps make the Iranian government look like the despotic thugs they are.

And let's be honest, ANYTHING that fucks with the Iranian government is a good thing, RIGHT?

I have a Twitter account but I don't microblog with it, I just use it to keep up with my favourite musician. While I love hearing about his creative process, and he does make some fascinating posts about that, I also really don't need to hear when he's puking drunk from drinking vodka all night.

And I absolutely adore Sockington.....

Oh, people, surely you remember this dingbat Jeff Frederick from the other day? He's the guy who blew up the Virginia GOP's carefully crafted secret plan to seize control of the Virginia State Senate by Twittering about it, thus tipping off the Democrats?
