fairdom23 -> which gag for a novice? (6/17/2009 2:30:58 PM)

I am looking to find the most comfortable yet functional ball(or other style if they are better) gag. This will be used on a novice vanilla girl, so i do not wish to make a negative impression about kink, just because the gag was uncomfortable...
i assume the neoprene ball gags with the rounded straps are better than the standard leather or fabric strap ball gag?
im not that experienced with using gags aside from make shift ones of cloth, but i would like to pick up a item or two to fatten up my toy collection....
any advice or recomendations are always greatly appreciated
thanks

Actually I was told by someone who wanted me to come to a party gagged, she did not reccomend ball gags like that, they're not very comfortable for wearing long term.

The second one which is more of a plug style should be easier to wear, so long as it doesn't make her gag. However gags in general are really not a vanilla item, I'd recommend staying away from them until she's not a novice vanilla girl.

She specifically asked if i had a gag, as she wants to try it.
now im just looking for one that will make the experience most enjoyable for her, so as to entice more adventurous activities...[:)]

I prefer gags that I can really bite into during a scene, I can let a lot of tension out that way.  my favorite one is made from rope, my Dom made it, but I'm sure you can find a similar one online.  plus, they don't preclude verbal communication quite as much as a ball gag, I think.

MMmph`Fan -> RE: which gag for a novice? (6/17/2009 10:27:56 PM)

Let me suggest a few things for those interested in wearing a gag for the first time.
Keep in mind these are only my opinions, and your millage may vary.

There are a few basic safety concerns to address, so I'll cover those first.

Some things you should ask the person you'll be gagging.

Do you have any medical conditions that make breathing difficult (asthma, emphysema, etc.) ?

Have you ever had your jaw lock-up, had a cramp in your jaw or been diagnosed with TMJ?
(Tip: Most people who have TMJ know it, however another good question is: "Can you chew gum without pain or discomfort in your jaw?")

Do you have a strong gag reflex?
(Tip: This is a subjective question, however another alternative question is "Is it difficult for you to brush your tongue, does it cause you to gag easily?")

Even if the answer to any of the above questions is 'Yes', it still may be possible to use a gag safely, you just may have to make adjustments to the type of gag used and the duration for which it's worn.

The all too common mistake people make when trying a gag for the first time is using a gag that is too large. If you're curious about trying a gag but are unsure of the size, you can make a simple, breathable ball-gag for a few dollars.

Head down to your local sports shop (or the sporting goods section at Walmart) and look for practice golf balls. You can usually pick up a pack of 12 for less than $4.  Make your way into the shoe section and look for a pair of soft laces with a little bit of elasticity to them.  Thread a shoelace through one of the practice golf-balls and you've got yourself a small, introductory gag.

If a more 'official' looking gag is desired, I've posted a couple of links and a great FAQ on gags below.

Start slow, with short durations to begin with. There's nothing like a locked up jaw to ruin an evening.

Play safe and have fun!

I wouldn't recommend subshop, I've gotten enough defective stuff from them that I won't shop there anymore. I'm also curious about leather gags. Have you tried this? How did it hold up? I've stayed away from gags where leather is inserted into the mouth since leather is a porous material that doesn't deal well with water. I'm skeptical of how well such gags would hold up and how much they could be sanitized.

I have found that for first time gags start with something simple, secure, and show her how it’s made.  The first gag I ever started a girl off with was actually a molded foam rubber stress ball. She watched me push a hole and thin soft line through it then bring it up in front of her. She was very comfortable with it because everyone knows how the stress balls feel when you hold them. It’s not inserting something completely foreign into their mouth.   As long as there comfortable it will be very rewarding for both of you.

Trekkie -> RE: which gag for a novice? (6/21/2009 2:14:06 PM)

I've used that first gag.  (I bought it from Mr. S, but I think they're all actually made by another company, so I'd expect the quality to be the same anywhere.  And, while I consider Mr. S to be the best gear dealer in the world, they're also the most expensive.  I've bought several things from SubShop, and while their quality isn't Mr. S, their prices may well be one-forth of theirs, too.  SubShop is one of the vendors I recommend as being well worth the money.)

And I found it to be very comfortable.  (I've never worn it, or any other gag, for more than an hour or so.  But I'd consider that gag to likely be #2 on my "most comfortable" list.)  The ball is rather small.  (I actually prefer my gags to not be comfortable.  And I suspect that I have a larger than usual mouth.)  The "strap integrated with the ball" design means that there's no hole in the side of the ball (no place where things can get trapped and can't be cleaned.  And it eliminates a place where pretty much every other ball gag pinches the corner of your mouth.)

(My number 1 "most comfortable gag" is a Mr. S padded muzzle.  Nothing goes inside the mouth at all.  The harness simply holds the jaw firmly closed, and holds a padded piece of leather over the mouth.)

But that gag, while I highly recommend it, is probably 200 bucks.  Not something you want to buy for a first-time sub who may very well change her maind and decide she doesn't like it.

GotSteel -> RE: which gag for a novice? (6/22/2009 5:13:23 AM)

Lol, if she's asking to be gagged she doesn't meet my definition of vanilla. I'd still recommend being cautious in using them on her, there needs to be a lot of communication in bdsm, even more so when someone is new and a device designed to inhibit communication can cause trouble.

Subshop makes a lot of their own stuff and has a huge selection of gags some of which I've never seen anywhere else. My issue with them is that on my last several orders the rivets weren't properly done, in one case they weren't hammered at all. When I went to put the forced orgasm harness on my sub for the first time and it fell apart in my hand, that was the last straw.

I quite like using badminton birdies, they are quite breathable, and the nub is tiny enough to be comfortable.

fairdom23 -> RE: which gag for a novice? (6/26/2009 1:43:56 PM)

how do you secure the badminton birdie?

BalletBob -> RE: which gag for a novice? (6/26/2009 3:49:14 PM)

How about some kind of tape, not as strong as Duct Tape?

MarsBonfire -> RE: which gag for a novice? (6/26/2009 8:27:59 PM)

The problem with ball gags is twofold: first, they make your jaw go numb fairly quickly. (Drooling quickly follows.) Second, I've yet to meet one that I couldn't push out of my mouth. Which kind of defeats the the idea. (I finally made one that didn't have either of these problems, by using a ball that was no bigger than a golf ball, and securing it first with a leather cord running through it's center, then attaching it to a wide belt that straps around the head. The ball itself is "woven" through a series of holes punched down the center of the belt's length. Thus, the ball can't move back into the throat, or be pushed out.) It works for me!

But, for a newbie, I'd get something like a rubber pony bit held in place by a thin buckle strap, or a full bridle, if you want to be dressy. You can bite down on them as hard as you like, and being cylindrical, you can also breathe around them fairly easily. (Plus, it gives you a place to attach a leash.)

WyldHrt -> RE: which gag for a novice? (6/26/2009 9:36:46 PM)

I have one like this:
http://www.sub-shop.com/1486atieoneonpvcgag-1.aspx
and love it. That said, I'm with GotSteel in that I won't buy from Sub-shop anymore. On one order I had a defective toy and items missing. When I complained, they ignored the missing items and told me to return the toy at my expense. [8|]

I've bought several things from them, with no problem.  I've seen reviews from people for years who are very happy with them.

The folks in this thread, however, are saying that they haven't been good recently.  (And I can't dispute that, because I haven't bought from then for a year or two.)

I've bought from them for years and used to be quite happy with them. As for the reviews, I did post some negative reviews on subshop but they were deleted.

Are you talking about a design sort of like this: http://www.sub-shop.com/images/view.aspx?productId=5703&index=8

As for being able to push them out, for most it really depends on how tightly they are strapped in. This includes the bit gag, by the time it's tight enough to prevent pushing out it will most likely be uncomfortable at the sides of the mouth. Even worn loosely my sub tends to catch the corners of her mouth between her teeth and the gag. However, I'd agree that as far as gags go, a bit gag is on the easy end of the scale since it doesn't really restrict speech or breathing.
