A male forms his understanding of his body image at around age 16 or 17. For the rest of our lives, even if we are 50 and have an acre of fat hanging around our belly and hair coming out of ears and back, that image of 16 is what we will see when we look in the mirror. (Not really see, but it is amazing how the mind will justify what you actually see to that original image of 16) Women are typically taught to see their flaws, cover them up, and be generally critical of their appearance. As far as I can tell from all the women I know, their body image is never completely set. And who the hell isn't pretty at 16? Even the ugly have the bloom of youth... Add that to general male bravado, and I would say Yes, it is more likely for a man to say he is handsome than a woman to say that she is beautiful.
