lobodomslavery -> Why charge the unemployed for help with CV? (6/18/2009 1:56:59 AM)

i got a mail earlier this morning. it offered CV help for €55. i just dont understand such a crass attempt to exploit the unemployed of which i am one. given that the social security rate is €85 a week, why would anyone offer something to an unemployed person when it is quite obvious that he/she would not be able to afford it. would it not be better to offer this assistance for free. after all in the end everyone will benefit. the out of work will get employment which in turn will help the wider economy through taxes and increased spending etc. why demand something which will only ensure that the unemployed stay jobless for longer as they cannot afford the assistance they are being offered

I am not sure about Ireland but in Australia there are places that assist people who are receiving unemployment payments with their resumes and job search. Most unemployed people here who are receiving government payments actually have no choice I  think, they have to attend one of the job search places after a certain period of time unemployed.

There are a number of online sites that also help you to create your own resume for free and they also have lots of job search advice and tips for interviews etc.

Some of the places who advertise cv preparation etc are possibly aimed at people who are already working and are maybe looking at changing jobs or professional people who may be able to afford the costs o getting a professional cv done.

someone is offering a service. If you do not like it, ignore it.

In the UK, the benefits agency will assist you with working on your C.V for nothing.  That doesn't stop other outside companies soliciting business by sending random emails to people.  I doubt they are aware that you are on some sort of benefit or unemployed, these places are for people who can afford it and whom are already in employemnt - who just seek to move up.
It's just a business.  You fall for it, or you don't.

I ran a resume service for several months.  I charged $200 for two hours of face time to rework a resume.  That also involved 3 or 4 hours of time reworking it, and reading the resume beforehand to understand where the customer's background truly lay.

Unfortunately, it also involved nine hours of marketing for every billable hour as well.  So when all was said and done, I was earning $8/hour with no benefits to run my own business.

Note that all resume places are NOT equal.  The ones that are connected to a government agency are normally pretty bad (although I saw one exception).  A good one will emphasize Accomplishments in addition to duties, and give you multiple esumes each targeted at different positions.

kevin, I've said this before... you've got Marxist tendencies (from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs).

I've heard their reasoning go a little like this:

"It's an investment. Once your CV is all bright and shiny (meaning we'll reword it with corporate powerword combinations and blatantly lie about the little things, oh, and print it out in arial instead of Times...), you'll get a job, therefore getting the money back tenfold."

It's all marketing bullshit of course. Just like the people who want you to send 'em £100 so they can process your win of £30million. Just go ahead and suggest they take the £100 out of your winnings...

Kevin, why not reply to them and suggest that, if they're that good, they should work their magic on your CV and invoice you. You'll have 28 days to pay and obviously, if they're that good, you'll be working by then...

Fitz, most resume places are in fact like you describe.  Spend money for marketing and sales, and then produce a piss-poor product.

But not all.  I did my damnedest for my clients, and I knew of one other Denver area place that did an outstanding job.

I actually took advantage of a free service once. The guy called me and proceded to try to belittle me for 20 minutes because I didn't like his choice of adverbs...*sigh* ...the idea of support, constructive criticism and offering a SERVICE went out the window a long time ago...

Not including your good self, Steven..

Curriculum vitae.  It's used in Europe and in academia, while in the US a resume is used (except for academia).

Kevin I agree with you. However if you've got the noggin to get this far into the Collarme site then I would assume that you also have the noggin to find a decent CV template either on the Internet or even within a decent word-processing application and come up with your own CV.

These people aren't exploiting the unemployed, just those who are either too lazy or too mug to do it themselves.
