From the very beginning, Jesus identified himself with the poor and the rejected, showing us that divine truth and power lie waiting where the world never thinks to look. Seeking the compassionate response of God is the only path to peace.

from The Sun and Moon Over Assisi: A Personal Encounter With Francis and Clare

i have a personal belief, taught to me by Dr. King, that nonviolence is effective, dignified and righteous, while violence is self-defeating, cowardly and dysfunctional. i remember the Civil Rights Movement he led, and how the southern Blacks were RIOTED UPON by civil authoriities and northern blacks attacked their communities -- not white ones -- in a paroxysm of grief when he was killed.

Nice ideal but in practice it can only work within nonviolent circumstances.

I am sure that the city fathers of Carthage will be happy to know that violence does not solve things.

Best,

One thing I think we in the USA can be proud of is that nonviolence works in our society. It's a mark of the level of our civilization.

I just finished a short story by Harry Turtledove called "The Last Article" written in 1988. It's an alternative history in which the Nazis win and take over India.

Since it seems you are replying to my post, I'd appreciate a bit of clarification about why you think I'm joking.

But at heart we have peaceful ideals. Otherwise, the National Guard would have mowed down the Freedom Riders with machine guns like Chinese response to the student protest at Tiananmen Square. The neat thing about a hypocrite is, if you back him into a corner, he often has to live up to the rhetoric he's been mouthing.

Societies like China, the pre-80's Soviet Union and Nazi Germany really didn't have much of a pretense of being peace loving.

which amounts to what? like a 10year old child..."i had good intentions,.,,i was trying hard" even though he still screwed up.

Society isn't perfect. If you want a perfect society head for Gor.... at least from what I've been told.

For me, all I ask is that people do try hard and learn from their failures.
