Hey all, I just installed Spyware Terminatorand am inpressed with it. Its free and offers realtime protection. It seems to catch a lot of things overlooked by other spyware removal programs. Does anybody know of anything wrong with this program?
I am inclined to recomend it.

Have you tried the new AVG. One of the things I like about the new AVG is that it checks links in a search (such as doing a search on Google) and gives you a red, green or yellow indicator beside the link. It does this before you ever go to the site. It also detects spyware at the moment the process starts, and if it is known spyware it will terminate the process for you and then give you a small message about it.

I have very few problems with Spyware, as I practice safe surfing and downloading.

I use AVG Pro. You buy one license and can protect 3 computers. But in addition you need to occasionally run programs against spyware, and use a registry cleaner. No one product does it all.

Thanks outlier, I will read those...no idea why I never bothered to google it, I usually do, I must have been distracted by the huge curry lunch my UM bought me for Father's Day.....yum!

And Orion, this comes with a toolbar that does the same sort of thing, I am still playing around with it. I installed it because we have a really persisitant redirector in our firefox at the moment that nothing seems to find. I am just about to delete firefox all together and reinstall it.

Hmm, well I guess I will keep it in my arsenal of free scanners, it seems to catch things others overlook, but then again one can say that about just about any spy scanner. Thanks for the info guys, and I promise I will google for myself before I ask on here next time.

Arpig,

I presume you are running Windows.

Now that you are more specific about the problem I
have another site I have used and recommended to others
who have used it.

http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/

Click on "software" in the upper left and then scroll down to freeware.
They have a lot of good powerful freeware including programs that will
identify everything that is starting automatically. Furthermore they have
one program "delete later" that will let you mark a running program so that
it will NOT restart the next time you boot your machine.

When I build a computer I will not connect the windows operating system
to the internet until I first load their "registry protector" and "delete later".
I like to be in control of what is in my computers.

I hope this helps, it has worked for others I have sent there.

AVG scans are set automatically, and run every day at 4 am. Yes a Reg cleaner can be good, unless the Windows system has problems in the registry that a reg cleaner may make worse.

I also keep spybot and Adaware SE available. Th redirector you are mentioning sounds similar to one that I got, from allowing a guest to use this computer. I forget the name but Adaware SE detected it, and then instructed me to download a plug in for Adaware SE and run it. In addition to this I had to empty the temporary internet folder and windows temp folder.

Ok, so I'm not a computer whiz as it seems so many of you are. I do know that a lot of these malicious programs plant themselves in the registry and make a mess. But how do I know what should and shouldn't be there? I went to that "diamonds" site, but didn't notice anything that seemed to be a spyware or malware sweeper/remover. The registry protector keeps asking me about registry entries and I don't recognize most of them so I don't know if they are necessary or not.

Really I just want something that will keep crap from destroying my computer. Someone please help me figure this out.

I am not a computer whiz by any means. I am a certified network engineer, and I did teach networking and Cisco courses for a year (don't swamp me with questions, it was a long time ago and most of my knowledge is out of date by now) and even I don't always know what is supposed to be in the registry or not. The first question I would ask you is are you actually having problems. If not then I wouldn't bother with trying to mess with the registry. Any one of the programs mentioned in this thread (Spyware terminator, AVG, Adaware, Avira, etc) will do a journeyman job of keeping your machine safe and clean, especially if used with a firewall. All the ones I mentioned are free, but if you can afford to buy a full security suite then I would recommend doing so, because it will do a much better job of protecting you than the free ones. You may have noticed that those of us who use the free ones have more than one installed, that's because they all miss stuff, so you scan with one and get rid of some shit, then scan with another and get rid of some more shit, and so on. Yeah its a pain, but you get what you pay for. I can't recommend a particular security suite over another, as I am too poor/cheap to pay for one.

And really, if you are not really sure of what you are doing, its best to stay out of your registry. When you get a notice, see if you can get any info about it from googling it.

I could be wrong, but I heard once that it's not good to have more than one antispyware program running at the same time - that is, if both are running in real time, proactively defending. I did have that situation once - with AVG and Windows Defender. Both caught the same piece of scumware, but they clashed and a trojan downloader duly got through. I use Spybot Search & Destroy, Malwarebytes AntiMalware (both free, and very good) and Kaspersky. The Kaspersky's the only one I have running in real time, though. No problems for more than five years now.

What? I would uninstall and reinstall it then. There has to be something unique going on with your computer because that is one I have not seen posted on the tech forums before.

I only have one running full time, I use the others to do scans only. And the problem with the redirector seems to have been fixed. lets hope so, I am getting tired of cutting & pasting URLs.

I have the Malwarebytes, and I've been happy with it. Last night all of a sudden some unknown thing popped up trying to tell me I had hundreds of trojans and spyware and trying to get me to click to fix them. A friend recently had had the same one and it was a nightmare for her. I'm relatively careful what sites I go to with this computer. My old one is so messed up it needs to be wiped entirely. Anyway, I immediately ran the Malwarebytes and it came up empty. I haven't loaded Adaware on here yet, I guess I should. I didn't realize that the AGV was free. I've heard a lot of good things about that one, but thought you had to pay for it. Like you Arpig, I'm too poor and too cheap to buy one.

That registry protector one doesn't seem to offer any information on what is trying to get into the registry. Years ago I went to school for computers (although I'm sorely outdated now as well). Shouldn't updates to the registry only occur when you download something? My theory being that if I'm not downloading something, any notices should be for things that I don't want. I don't know. I think I'm going to remove it. Then go get the AGV and adaware running on here.

I just got this laptop a few months ago and I really don't want it to get all messed up.

I and my clients have had problems in the past with redirectors. CM me on the other side if you are still having problems. Even the VR2 (think that is what that malware was) I got, I had to manually change some reg entries and the infected file was set as a hidden and system file, so that automatic delete of the temp internet files did not remove it.

Not just when you download or install something. It could have been an active X control, or other plug in. Also, some sites you go to trigger those messages themselves, and anything you click on downloads the malware. The best thing in those circumstances is to end process on internet explorer. Then restart the computer in safe mode and run an active scan with whatever program you are running.

I use tea timer from Spybot to lock my registry, and it makes a back up of the registry for you as well. I also recommend create windows restore points on a regular basis.

I've seen that one. It ignores your clicking the X and pretends to do a scan? It's not scanning anything, of course.

I think it's called Windows Antispy (or something equally bland and official-sounding). It's nasty. People have installed it, only to find that it pops up as nagware constantly, advising that they download and install the paid-for version. They then shell out lots of money for a program that does nothing at best.

Just a quick update, the redirector seems to be gone, so kudos to Spyware Terminator (took two deep scans to do it though)

Ignore all that, spoke to soon....its baaaaaack!!! I am guessing there is an installer hidden away somewhere....curse grumble curse
