I am sitting here watching the increasing state of unrest in Iran.

As many here have stated, I am not sure what the USA can or should realistically DO {at this time} as far as intervening in this situation.
It appears that most certainly, hundreds will be killed.

This seems to be the FIRST case of widespread political unrest that the world is able to see closely due to cellphones, personal webcams, and get first hand accounts via the web and tweeter.

Being able to see and listen to so much coverage is lifting the veil on what often happens in cases of political unrest.
We can all sit and watch and read tweets to what is really going on in Iran, on a very intimitate basis.
What is making it more interesting, is reporters are being banned from covering the situation.
Reporters risk certainly being arrested if not killed if they attempt to cover the situation.
I just heard the case of a young woman killed by the police, whose burial will now be held in secret.

Most of what we see/hear now will certainlty be covered by those directly involved/participating.
What are your thoughts on the cellphone/personal video/tweet/internet coverage?
There used to be a saying "The revolution will not be televised", we need to change that....
This revolution will be televised and broadcasted on all forms of media by the people directly involved.

The coverage we get that way will present only tiny pieces of a larger story. Think of it/them as soundbites. Compiling all the pieces into something larger and coherent will be the task of someone very dedicated and already knowledgeable about the area, the culture, the history, the events that have led to the current state of affairs.

And, Gil Scott Heron wasn't it?

The US does not need to do anything. An unstable and split Iran is great news for the region as a whole.

No, it's not.  Instability is not a good thing as a rule.  Nor are totalitarian, anti-West governments.

Before Khameini took over, Iran was a pro-Western bulwark.  I hope that it will be again.

MzMia, we are doing exactly what we should be doing.  Even though the EU wussies ratified the election instantly and the US is sitting back, the hardliners are still blaming the unrest on devious Western influences.  The West is basically guilty of providing the cell phones that recorded the riots, and of watching them, no more.

Even the GOP, normally very quick to criticize Obama, has issued light twits of him and then been quiet.

The west, be that the US or whoever, should keep the fuck out of it, it is their problem, let them sort it out. Yes, there will be deaths, but isn't there always in the forging of a nation.

Now either the present president will control the situation, or the people will seek the solution, it will hurt, but what will come to happen eventually, is the place will stabilise, they did it on their own without foreign intervention. Foreign intervention might very well lead to more hatred and distrust of the west in the middle east.

Doh, ah, I get it, oil.

It was Gil Scott Heron, OMG he was wonderful.
I found the video! What a classic !
It is as revelant today, as it was 40 years ago.

Yep.  That's the way it needs to be.  I want my gov't to stay well clear.  Now an individual show of support, such as you'll notice over to the left (and hopefully clogging the filters of a repressive regime) is another sort of thing.

       And then there is Neda.

I agree entirely, but kind of think you should have extended that further than just the west .

(well spotted about the oil too, but methinks the US to be too skint and overstretched militarily to do fuck all even if it wanted too)

The revolution in Iran would be a bit easier for those wanting freedom if President Obama would give a strong statement supporting their cause. He is sitting on the fence and letting the chips fall where they may. By basically saying nothing he is supporting the ruling mullahs..

Only being able to get what we can from the cell phones of those there is good.  But, it should also be supported by some form of media.  Unfortunately, that won't happen.   Once again   one sided communication.

The revolution is going to happen at it's own pace and own costs.   This one we should ride out.   Let it happen.   Keep Obama out of it totally.  This will give the Mid-East an arena to say, see  this is how we solve out internal problems.   To bad for the losers.   And it will give the US the future chip of being able to say - see  this is how your system works.

I was in a country that had a revolution going on.   It wasn't pretty.   But the US stayed out of the fray and just let it happen.   Oh the outcome wasn't what we wanted.   But eventually it was a good thing.

Will we still continue to get good cell phone coverage?
It might start getting a little dicey.

I don't think they can control all the cell phone coverage, that is just way too hard.
