Just a quick note - " Tried a Nair "sugaring" kit (very similar to waxing). This is heated in the microwave." Real body sugaring isn't heated. It's just sugar, water, and lemon juice, (you can eat any you don't use) cooked to a hard ball stage, and let cool to become a sticky soft paste. Well... at first, it's a stiff, clear lump, but as you use it, it gets softer. It's spplied by smushing it on against the hair growth, and yanked off with the hair growth, so it doesn't break hairs off - no ingrown bits. It also doesn't glue itself to live cells, so it doesn't rip off skin the way wax does, and since it's not heated, you can't burn yourself with it. It's still pulling out hairs, so yes, its painful, but not nearly as much as waxing. You might have to go over an area a few times to get all the hair, but you can do that with sugar. As mentioned, the first time is always worst, as the roots have had a nice, long time to grow big and strong and deep. Lots of recipies online, and some great vidoes on making it on youtube. Honestly, at this point, I'm tweezing a lot too. It's just easier than the contortions needed to get to things at the right angle for yanking.
