ORIGINAL: ThatDamnedPanda good god, how did he expect to get away with this? In this day and age, a governor can't just hop onto a plane and fly to another continent for a week without telling anyone where he's going. Panda, I'd normally agree with you but I have the feeling that he's pulled this stunt before. I know that if any other man disappeared without a word to his wife and kids, let alone coworkers, they'd be reported as a missing person. Sure, but (if I understand your point) he's more than a husband and father - he's also the governor of a state. People tend to notice when a whole week goes by and nobody can remember noticing the governor anywhere. Interestingly enough, the very same thing happened here in Minnesota a few years ago, when we had Jesse Ventura infesting the governor's mansion. He had the brilliant idea that he could sneak off to LA for a week or so and shoot a few scenes in a movie one of his friends was filming; pick up an extra paycheck and nobody'd be the wiser. I think it took about 2 or 3 days before the local media noticed that he was nowhere to be seen, and within 4 days after he disappeared, the whole thing had unraveled and he had to fess up. And fly back from LA, all pissy because he couldn't have things both ways, the way he always liked it. As a former journalist, it's just incomprehensible to me that a governor could disappear for a week, without any reporters noticing. And once one reporter notices that the governor is missing, and nobody seems to know where he is, they're going to crawl across broken glass to be the first to break the story on whatever it is that's going on. Once one reporter notices, it's over, because he or she is going to bore in like a heatseeking missile. I just don't see how it's sustainable.
