Asherdelampyr -> Video Games =/= Violence (6/25/2009 8:01:37 PM)

So, There is this theory I have been tossing around all day and I figured, hell with it I'll toss it here.
I was a very violent person growing up, but when I started playing video games more and more I became a lot less violent. I come from people with a history off having a very short fuse, and I used to have it too, but now? not so much. I play fairly violent video games (GTA, Devil May Cry, God Of War) and I honestly am starting to think that playing them gave me an outlet for that rage that used to constantly fill me. I know that there have been a lot of people saying that video games make people violent. I propose the opposite theory. People are violent by nature, video games can give them a safe place to let that violence out.
Thoughts?

I completely agree.
There are always exceptions I am sure and they get most of the publicity.  As I found different outlets for my own aggressiveness my tastes in video games changed.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Video Games =/= Violence (6/25/2009 8:16:10 PM)

When I had my Xbox and PS2 (&3), I was playing violent games yet I was mellow. I am old school, so I enjoy the old 8-bit games on the PS2 (FFI and II anyone?) and I kicked Gauntlet Dark Legacy so many times, I got the cheatcodes to be the BDSM dwarf and the japanese schoolgirl. When I am not playing games or cruising the boards, I feel upset and mad (I blame the bipolar). The games were a way to keep me relax and chilled.

Maybe I will retrieve my PS2 in Austin later on. FFI is calling me again.

thishereboi -> RE: Video Games =/= Violence (6/25/2009 8:19:40 PM)

I don't think violent games cause violence in people, although I do believe violent people are drawn to violent games. I can totally relate to getting your frustration out on a game. Nothing like blowing up monsters to chill your self out.

I Loved FF1, it is my favorite RPG of all time.

My former partner did anything with an WWII theme. He specialized in sniper fire and when he took too long to shoot someone (like dinner time), I would tell him to hurry up and snipe the bastard!

TheHeretic -> RE: Video Games =/= Violence (6/25/2009 9:17:30 PM)

I am not a gamer (and I really suck at them anyway), but I have discovered the soothing effects of kicking back in the recliner and playing Call of Duty: WaW online, or just blowing the fuck out of nazi zombies up to level 20 or so.

As to the notion that it decreases violent tendencies though, I would need to see some numbers on how many controllers go through how many TV screens...

ShaharThorne -> RE: Video Games =/= Violence (6/25/2009 9:27:08 PM)

Considering I had a Sega Gensis, PSOne, PS2 and PS3, Nitntendo64 and the original 8-bit, Xbox360 and original Xbox in a few years clumped together, I am surprised my hands have not morphed into a controller shape. I want to get my SSI going so I can get an Xbox360 Elite and rent a few games from Hastings (Blockbuster sucks).

I am to play Doom now....wwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Video Games =/= Violence (6/25/2009 10:38:53 PM)

Hastings sucks too
get Gamefly, they rock!

"video games don't affect kids, if pacman had affected us as kides, we'd al be running around in darkened rooms munching magic pill and listening to repetitive electronic music"

CountrySong -> RE: Video Games =/= Violence (6/25/2009 11:17:29 PM)

I think it works both ways. When my bipolar was a major issue I created an entire multiverse in my head so I could deal with the feelings there instead of taking them out on the real world. Birth, death, love, hate. All expressed in a virtual world. I could literally bring myself to real world tears. It worked - very few people knew if I was up or down as I appeared stable and was able to function. The bad side is that it desensitized me to violence. I can kill and have in the real world - animals only but I would have no issue killing a human if I needed to.
I work in the mental illness feild and I see a lot of the same - they provide an outlet but also desensitize.

Hum - reminds me of these:
MR. CAMPBELL (President of Philip Morris U.S.A.).
I believe nicotine is not addictive, yes.
MR. TADDEO (President of U.S. Tobacco).
I don´t believe that nicotine or our products are addictive.
MR. TISCH (Chairman and CEO of Lorillard Tobacco Company).
I believe that nicotine is not addictive.
MR. HORRIGAN (Chairman and CEO of Liggett Group).
I believe that nicotine is not addictive.
MR. SANDEFUR (Chairman and CEO of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company).
I believe that nicotine is not addictive.
MR. DONALD JOHNSTON (President and CEO of American Tobacco Company).
And I, too, believe that nicotine is not addictive.
MR. JAMES JOHNSTON (Chairman and CEO of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company). Mr. Congressman, cigarettes and nicotine clearly do not meet the classic definition of addiction. There is no intoxication.

Vendaval -> RE: Video Games =/= Violence (6/25/2009 11:32:50 PM)

I do not recommend exposing youngsters without violent tendencies to these types of games but those who do have violent impulses can certainly use violent video games as an outlet for anger and frustration.

Actually, I wasn't able to find a credible reference to that quote, just thought it was really funny, but in any case, I think that the whole Violent video games=violence vs violent video games=/=violence argument can be sumed up like so many issues, on a case to case basis, and I don't think that video games creates the necessary reactions to trigger violence,it's just that some times it has desensitizing aspect, as well as the cyber age destroying a certain amount of human interaction as a whole any how.... But hey, at least we can figure out out vcr's and microwaves now 8D

Interesting article on PBS website about the myths surrounding gamers and violence:

Reality Bytes: Eight Myths About Video Games Debunked

About every 4-6 months I will play a game continuously until I get bored with it, which usually takes a few weeks.  I'm just not much of a gamer; I never have been.  I can still remember the cops raiding arcades in the middle of the day looking for truants and potheads supposedly.  What they were really doing is bowing to the local moral crusaders who wanted them shutdown.

PyrotheClown -> RE: Video Games =/= Violence (6/26/2009 1:01:21 AM)

yeah, they would have known that all us truant pot heads were out getting laid 8D

My fault, I should have been more specific. I was talking about adults :D
The issues with the younguns and violence are way too messy for me to step into :D
