It occurs to me that there are two primary ways to starve a troll (particularly with regard to a troll-started thread): (a) ignore, or (b) reply to a troll-post or post to the troll-started thread but without entering into the 'serious conversation' the troll is ostensibly looking for (ie, make fun of the trollish-OP or troll post, engage in highjinks & highjacks, etc.)

Which do you prefer, if you do have a preference? Do you think one is more noble or despicable than the other? Do you know of other ways to starve the trolls?

(& of course keeping in mind that no bridge is complete without a troll, one person's troll is another persons hero, etc, etc . . . . . )

& while we're at it, does replying to something 'mean' something above & beyond the ostensible reply? Was the bard right when he said, thou dost protest an awful freakin' lot, & that protest 'means' something? & how does one know what another 'means' in these contexts? Do we dignify a notion when we argue against it? If one just ignores something one disagrees with, doesn't that risk leaving that errant opinion as the only opinion out there?

(Oh, &, lol, I'm not looking for any particular reply . . . . I thought this would possibly make an interesting conversation . . . . When I post a thread I'm mostly looking to stimulate interesting conversation, especially one that will go on for many many pages . . . . . )

No shocker to anyone here.  I'm definitely in the 'b' camp.  There have just been too many threads written by trolls that weren't worth the space they took up on the net, with the exception of the fun had by the regulars poking at said troll.  Some of those threads end up being funnier than the intentional jokes posted in the humor section.

By far, the best ones come from those who think they are fooling us in being anything but a troll to begin with.  That we're stupid enough to believe what they've typed up.  I remember one very clearly that was regarding cbt where it was so blatantly obvious that the dude had created a profile as a female that was so easy to see through that I think at least half of us were referring to the OP as "he" within the first page.  Another was a post written by someone who thought he was being so slick that when the troll roast came so quickly the profile was deleted within the hour that he put his post up.  Both threads were absolutely hilarious and I wish I could link them here just for the entertainment value alone.

Of course, there are the trolls that stick with us, too.  There are certain screen names that pop up that you immediately know that the thread and it's creator aren't worth the time of day, with the exception of the fun that will be had proving that very concept.  Some of which are so bad that their trollish behavior leaks into other threads and become something of a running gag, breathing continued life in our opportunity to laugh at the person in question.

True mockery vs. Flaming or starving.

Get one of us artists to do  caricatures of trolls  (or journo's) and have the site allow using images in posts and you'll see FAR less trolls REAL fast.

I can go with either option a or b depending on the troll, the subject matter and my mood at the time. One of the funniest troll bashing incident I have seen here on CM was when a real asshole fired up in the Mistress Forum and every woman in there announced she was putting him on "Ignore".

No, Pyro, because the artist doing a caricature for themselves ABOUT a troll is the LASTT thing a troll wants.

Caricatures are not always the fun sketches at seaside jaunts.

Hmmmm, a thread about trolls. WHY am I so not surprised to see holly posting here?

As for me, I'm like Vendaval, it really depends on my mood, energy level and boredom. Or if they've really pissed the shit outta me. A lot of trainwrecks I pass by but some are simply too good an opportunity to miss.

I still say we need an emote of 2 train engines chugging along about to run into each other head-on..... for "trainwrecks"!

LOL

Most excellent. I would agree that I have thread envy except that, from what I've seen, really long threads tend to be troll-sponsored, on one of the dreaded worst topics, or are otherwise trainwrecks . . . . But I figured this was the place to state my aspirations.

How to see what threads someone has started, easily? (This method will only bring up the most recent ones, admittedly.) Go to their CollarChat profile page & click on 'view threads only' . .. . .

& I am interested in hearing if there are other ways to starve a troll . . . . . For instance:

KurtKaboom, I got no idea how what you said applies to my questions. Could you explain some, please?

To answer my own OP: I generally prefer to reply to questions that are coming from a more positive space, rather than from a complaining space; I usually try to ignore those posts I perceive as trollish; but I do enjoy reading all the repartee in troll-started threads . . . .. I'd probably contribute more to the highjacking highjinks, but I frequently don't feel terribly witty . . . . . lol . . . .. You could say I have some wit envy, too . . . . . & I think it is appropriate to swat trolls around verbally & to otherwise engage in silliness in troll-started threads . . .. .

Fooey on that baloney, Kia!!!! You're about the only person I know that has several other people quoting you in their siglines!!! You have plenty of wit, intelligence and humour!

And I agree on swatting trolls. Similar to flies and mosquitos, they should smacked upside the head.

So, slapping the trolls around is one way of starving them?

Interesting...
