Welp I thought it pretty harmless. Friend of mine has no CC and wants on this dating site for thirty bucks a month. Says a month will do it so he can contact a few Women he found attractive. OK. He forks over the money and I put my numbers in.

Everything is fine, until the bill comes, now I am almost a hundred bucks into this mess. Now he will pay, I know him well in fact I said "Wait until the dust settles and I see what they'll take off", and they already have eliminated some of the charges. B y next month I should be able to give him an accurate figure for how much more he owes for a thirty buck one month membership. One thing I like about this guy, he pays, pulls his own weight and hardly ever asks anyone for anything. Unfortunately for me he never asked anyone for a credit card, that's why he doesn't have one. Never wanted one except for in this instance. No credit, but not because he is stupid, because he has managed to live within his means. So I know he will fork over the money.

Problem is, when I filled out the online form there was nothing about this being a recurring charge nor the fact that it was a "gold" membership which had the basic membership fees tied in. The question really is, is it possible that by "autocomplete" or some other feature who's inventor should have been shot, might be simply re-upping the membership ? That his PC would do it automatically ?

Now as one who thinks they have gone too far in CC security in some ways, for example requiring ID for a twelve buck sale, there is just something wrong with this. I mean really I like being able to send someone to the store for more beer, things like that. But this is ridiculous. What also gets me is that I recently bought about $2,500 worth of computer stuff from a place I had dealt with before and while on the phone about to give them the card info the guy says "Oh, we don't need any of that, it's all on file. Your order will be shipped by Tuesday Mr. _____". Just like that.

Could someone explain to me how they fucked this situation up so badly ? Back before I swore off inkjet printers I went in for a twelve dollar ink cartridge and they wanted to see ID. I had to laugh, come on now, if I stole this card there wouldn't be an ink cartridge on the counter, there would be the bestest most ridiculously expensive stuff in your store. Then if you go to Wellman & Griffith you can spend ten grand on aelectronics and it will all be delivered wherever you say, on a signature. And I mean anywhere, like Wisconson. I know because they shipped Bob Dylan a "spare" system. That was before they had a website, all done on the phone.

So how did we get here ?

Many people pay for, for example their ISP on a card, and it is a recurring charge. But they knew that upfront. Is it possible that anyone you use a CC with could simply charge you every month like that ? Add unauthorized charges based on who knows what, possibly some fine print at the bottom of a webpage ? (and I thought I looked around for that pretty well before proceeding).

OK, I am not a complete babe in the woods when it comes to banks and all that crap. But I am having trouble understanding how things are when it comes to CCs and how and who gets paid what. If I am that vulnerable like that I am very glad to have my regular ATM card. That's right there is no logo on my checking card, and that is because I don't want it usable for POS transactions, or actually anything else. I am not really pissed, all this is is jumping through some hoops and getting some charges taken off, when shit like this happens to your checking account it can make your checks bounce. Now that is no joke, it is about a hundred times worse than not even paying the bill, really.

<sarcasm> Is there a way to tell if it's going to be a recurring charge or are we forever at the mercy of these highly trustable merchants ? </sarcasm>

Contact the credit card company immediately. Cancel the card and dispute the charges. A new card will then be issued to you..I would not wait a minute to dispute that bill...

Termy...i know this does not help you now, but in the future tell your bud to get one of those prepaid credit cards. The fees cannot be recurring if he doesn't pay into the card.

Oh, I'm sure there was some small print somewhere, (probably on a separate page) that said you starting a membership was agreeing to continue it until you provided them with a written statement asking the service, or product to be discontinued. That's common practice for many companies -most infommercial products like Proactive skin care, Time-Life records, gym memberships, cable tv service and so on. They use a low "introductory price" to start you off, knowing they will get a MINIMUM of two months to three months out of everyone because they don't immediately cancel recurring shipments, or charges. By the time you figure out you've been charged for a second month, it's "too late" to cancel for that time, and maybe even the next month as well . As for companies keeping your information, there are usually ways for you to op out of that, but they make you ASK for it to be purged, usually in some written form. Most people don't read the usage agreements, or that lovely "privacy" brochure that banks, and other lenders have to provide you these days, but it's probably buried somewhere in one of those two documents. Sorry that happened, but it's really business as usual these days.

My credit card offers something called ShopSafe.  It generates a FREE temporary account number for each online purchase and i get to pick the limit and expiration date.  It actually comes out of my main Credit Card account but the merchant never sees my account just the temporary one.

FR, after read thru

The key is 'maximum profit'. Business success is measured by the bottom line, whether one likes the full implications of that or not. & businesses can get away with disgruntling, even killing, customers a certain amount of the time, & still make a profit. Corporate charters legally obligate corporations to pursue maximal profits, or they can (& are) sued by shareholders . . . . . & since the CEOs & etc are frequently shareholders (thru stock option compensation), they pursue those goals above & beyond the responsibility owed to the rest of the shareholders . ... That's one of the points of stock options, is to align management goals with shareholder expectations . . . ..

& setting up 'negative option' membership situations is a tried & true tactic, been around for decades . . . . . . They do it because it is more profitable than the alternative . . ...

Yes, and make sure it is a prepaid card.  Do not rely on getting a card with a $100 limit because the bank may unilaterally increase your limit as "a courtesy" to you; then honor the charges; and then be very reluctant about reversing the charges.  I have seen that happen.

Listen to Holly, Term. She has highly honed and practiced budgeting skills.

And FFS, stop giving out sensitive information to everyone with a sob story who shows up! It's not your responsibility to get another dude laid!

You don't need to cancel your card. Call your credit card company and dispute the charges. Then go to the dating site and cancel the membership. Im sure your friend will understand. You did him a favor. if he doesnt understand, then he's not your friend. he needs to get his own card or do paypal or something.

How will a credit score even matter?  No one has any money.

Not even the banks.  So how would it matter?

Cut your losses and move on.  We all have been too stupid to work an account- and that includes me and many times.

What I view as worse then the few bucks that Term is out of - is that he let his guard down and was burned.    What if Term, you blew it on a major item in your life?

So if I sound flip- it is the realization- that- the damage could have been 100 times worse.

I am sorry if I sounded mean or antagonistic.  Term is the type tho- that KNOWs how things go.    He has a brilliant mind and even he cant work a charge card.

What does that tell you about the banks?   Who also are not smart enough to work an account...and if they are- then where is the  bail out money.

Hugs to Term, but the dude doesn't need my hugs he needs to sharpen his protective wall.  (so there is not a worse situation later)
