As has been posted, the most common method used to harvest silk is to boil the cocoons, which does kill the pupa within. Vegan silk is out there, but is harder to find and not as durable, due to the breaks in the fiber made by the emerging moth. That said, there's more than one way (about 1001, actually) to bind a g/f, and plenty of modern materials are vegan friendly
