"Madoff sat passively throughout the hour-and-a-half hearing as his victims called him a "beast," an "animal" and a "lowlife." He apologized to his victims, at one point briefly turning in the direction of the 250 people gathered in the courtroom. "I will live with this pain, with this torment, for the rest of my life," he said in calm, measured tones, standing and buttoning his suit jacket. "I live in a tormented state knowing the pain and suffering I have created."

at least the 2.5 million his wife lives on will let her travel to see him. My heart pumps purple piss.no sympathy, nothing.Lucy

Not really.

He will be faked dead, get a new ID and then live in a non-extradition country.    I give it less then 3 years.

I'm still waiting to see whether the feds indict his sons or if he "miraculously" comes up with a big wad of cash to pay restitution to his victims.

10 people to be charged in Madoff investigation, source says

NEW YORK – Federal authorities are pressing a probe of 10 associates of Bernard Madoff despite a sentence that means the mastermind of one of the biggest financial frauds in history will spend the rest of his days behind bars, The Associated Press has learned.

A person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, wouldn't detail potential charges or say whether the 10 would include Madoff's family or former employees. So far, only Madoff and an accountant accused of failing to make basic auditing checks have been criminally charged in the multibillion-dollar hoax.

150 years ??? I'll bet he doesn't serve the entire sentence. (WHY do they DO that ?)

Pirate

Because it is a series of prison terms to be served consecutively. In this way even though he will be eligible for parole on some large number of convictions he will still have many more sentences still to serve and therefore won't be released. It's functionally a life sentence even though none of the crimes he was convicted of carry life as a possible sentence.

I am of the opinion that his wife and sons need to set up a charity for his many victims and start working to replace all that was lost as a form of restitution.

candisa -> RE: Madoff Gets 150 years (6/30/2009 2:55:38 PM)

I think his wife should have also been given some of those years, there is no way in hell she did not know what was going on. She walks away scott free, She did have to return some of her assets, but able to move on with her life.

I'm of the opinion his sons will be the next to be arrested.

I think the story about him confessing to his sons and them turning him in was more probably Madoff deciding to fall on his sword when the scheme fell apart to try and shield his family.

There is no way a fraud of this magnitude, carried on for so many years, was able to be accomplished without others in his company at least being aware of it, and more than likely party to it.

All th etop management, ie. his sons, had to know. One simple way to know, no stock trades were occuring even though they were reporting thousands of trades. Where were the traders? A fund the size of Madoff's should have had a floor of some building filled with traders and support staff. That's not an easy thing to not notice.

Actually, she lost most everything.

She was able to keep $2.5 million, which is a nice chunk of change, but she initially claimed $80 million as her own personal assets.

The $2.5 million is a lot of money but it's not going to let her live the Manhattan penthouse/Palm Beach mansion lifestyle she had.

And she seems slightly pissed about that:

Ruth Madoff broke her silence Tuesday to suggest she was among the victims of Madoff's deceit. Her husband, she said in a statement, "stunned us all with his confession and is responsible for this terrible situation in which so many now find themselves."

Somehow I think she has accounts stashed away that are unknown at this time to the authorities.
