With you? Yes a little. The boys? Yes, but only so much. With people I work with? Uhhh, no. I can not tolerate and have nearly zero patience for, stupidity, lack of will, inablity to at least try, yes women/men, engineers that fail to realize that practical does not always come out like on paper, suppliers in general and of cousre everybodies favourite-Drivers that have no idea how to signal.

Have I learned to be more patiencent over the years? Yes, for the sake of my health and freedom, I had to. I'm to big, I did way to many chemicals in the 80's and 90's and I smoke to much to stress out, lest I stroke out.

With family and friends, yes...though it can be strained at times.
For stupidity, unrealistic anger towards others, bigotry, etc....NONE at all...

Do you beleive patience can/could be learned?

Absolutly. I agree with LAM on this one...that a person is not born with patience, it is something that they learn through time.

angelic -> RE: patience? (2/15/2006 4:14:00 PM)

define 'patience', please.

Ecarta states: capacity for waiting: the ability to endure waiting, delay, or provocation without becoming annoyed or upset, or to persevere calmly when faced with difficulties.

So, does this mean i wait until the 12th of never and don't get annoyed or upset by it?

This is a very interesting thread for me as i have been told that i have no patience.

At what point does one know they have been 'patient'? When does having patience become being a complete fool for not standing up for oneself? Or does it ever?

very interesting thread for me personally.

Ah - YIKES! Patience??? LOL Learning, yes learning, (contemplates the emotional marks from past impatience). But sometimes it's still just plain fun to go "oh hell, let's see where i land after this".

slaveladyj -> RE: patience? (2/15/2006 6:34:20 PM)

I'm patient when I have to be. At my age, it is definitely something learned. there is no point in getting upset over things one has no control over, so being patient is one's only choice.

DragonNphoenix -> RE: patience? (2/15/2006 6:36:49 PM)

Learned. Patience is a vertue that few naturally possess. I know that I dont... or at least didnt before I met my Dragon.

I believe patience is something learned.

I began joining the patience training course when a had my son. Pregnancy and motherhood will definately test your patience.
I have and am content to have mellowed quite well where patience is concerned.
My last relationship, almost two years L/D/R, travaling back and forth.
It taught me a great deal in having patience in a relationship.
Also that Anticipatory patience is exciting now for me as opposed to frustrating.

Now there are some times/things where I have a hard time with patience.

*Waiting for a real live person to talk to on the phone.
*Listening to horible blaring music while waiting for said person.
*Waiting, waiting, waiting at an ER when you or a loved one is really ill.
*Waiting in line of a nasty Satalite toilet. You want to get there, but you know you're going to hate it once you do.
*I have a hard time with patience when there is any Loud construction going on early in the morning.

Well, you get the picture. My patience wears more thin with the little irritants in life as opposed to big picture or larger challenges in life.

ownedgirlie -> RE: patience? (2/15/2006 8:24:37 PM)

i used to have no paitence, for anything. i have learned.

i learned patience when i cared for my elderly grandmother and saw how terribly rude others are to those who have lived long lives and are in their tender years.

i learned patience from a man who seems to have an endless supply, and taught me how to tap into my own supply.

i learned patience by understanding everyone is human, and screws up, and hurts, and makes airheaded mistakes, because it seems every time i LOSE patience for someone like that, i seem to be the next in line to screw up, or hurt, or make an airheaded mistake.

i still don't have patience for sudden loud noises. It is left over trauma. We're working on that.

i still don't have patience for traffic. It stands to reason that everyone ahead of me who is going slower than me is totally inconsiderate (grin).

i learned to have patience for love, because when it is real, it will push you to grow, but wait for you to figure it out.

Great thread. Thank you. [:)]

Oh gawd, am I patient?? NO. It doesn't come naturally for me to wait for things. I'm impulsive and hedonistic and my brain revs exceedingly high...I want what I want when I want it...which is yesterday, usually...

Do I practice and pretend to be patient because I'm an adult? Heck, yes! I even fool folks into thinking I have the patience of a saint sometimes. (I can mentally gnash my teeth with a serene smile on my face...thanks to almost 30 years of experience working in special education, and family service.)

I have struggled to learn patience and oddly enough the one thing that has had some real effect on me is submission. It's been the biggest influence on my ability to slow my brain and live in the moment...maturity and meditation helped but truly, I think being in a D/s relationship is what finally taught me how to seek the quiet core.

I always say, "If I had patience I'd be a doctor!"

Seriously, it IS something that can be learned and it's usually well worthwhile learning. I have (to some degree) and it's helped me in both my Vanilla and my BDSM lives.

Aimtoplease101 -> RE: patience? (2/15/2006 11:34:54 PM)

I think it is a characteristic you can acquire with time and experience. I've certainly become more patient with age.

Of course I've learned patience! Now can we dispense with these damned, stupid questions!

Sirandlittle1 -> RE: patience? (2/16/2006 12:08:12 AM)

I think that most children have instant gratification as a developemental phase. Most of us grow out of that. Some dont.
I have ltd patience, and its always scenario specific. examples allready given are very similar for me.
I work within the mental health field, where you HAVE to go at someone elses pace. I have oodles of patience for patients, my children, my loved ones.
I have mellowed somewhat in my intolerance of fools, but only mildly. I right people off fast, very fast. And i know that this has been my loss. But a lot of people drive me nuts.
As i age, i learn tolerance, patience, simply, i have mellowed. Im far more serene whilst waiting in my 40's than i was at say 20.
Within my D/s relationship, i have to wait, often. Im not told for how long, or even if its going to pay off waiting, i just have to wait. That is soooooo hard for me. I cant stand the 'we shall see' response.
But i fake patience for him, he either does not seem to know the difference between real patience and feigned patience, or it doesnt suit him to consider it as relevant?

If I'm feeling well, I'm a fairly patient person. If my endo is acting up or my blood sugar drops to low and I don't feel well, my patience wears thin much faster. I do believe that patience can be learned because the older I get, the more patient I've become.

i'm probably the most patient person i've ever met. Waiting in a long line at the store? who cares! Stuck behind a semi in rush hour traffic? Who cares! teaching someone something and they still dont get it after 4 hours? noooo prob! i've always been this way though. i do things that others wouldn't have the patience for and it doesnt bother me one bit.

UtahGoddess -> RE: patience? (2/17/2006 9:17:18 PM)

I don't think patience is something that is learned so much as it is something practiced.

why is it they say that doctors "practice" medicine? personally, i want a doctor that's got it right and no longer needs practice...LOL

C'mon michael....admit it.

You want a lil private practice. LOL
