(From a recent news report....for those of you old enough to remember the Sony Walkman....this is kind of amusing):

"What better way to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Sony's iconic Walkman than to ask a teenager for some feedback on the device?

The BBC couldn't think of one, and neither can I.

I like to imagine that the experience was similar to an archaeologist rediscovering how a recently excavated artifact was employed thousands of years ago. But I'm well aware that it must have been different for 13-year-old Scott Campbell, who co-edits his own news Web site.

For one, teenage impatience must have stood in the place where I fantasize scientific curiosity should have been.

"My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day," Campbell wrote. "He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realized he meant that big. It was the size of a small book."

Sure enough, people on the street noticed the antique clinging from his belt with amusement and friends on his school bus were quick to come up with some witty remark.

Campbell went on to criticize the portable cassette player's size, appearance, functionality and the "hissy backtrack and odd warbly noises."

Even when he discovered the cassette had more music on the other side (it took him three days), Campbell was still disappointed it could only hold a small fraction of what an iPod can.

"Did my dad ... really ever think this was a credible piece of technology?"

Ouch.

Ok that just makes me feel old (At 29 years of age, that is not a good thing).

You feel old ? HA ! I remember going out to buy a turntable. (that played those vinyl disks), but the twist was to get one that still had the 16 and 78 speeds and was of good quality, I had to spend extra. Also remember that a 78 takes a different stylus.

Of course the record players they had in cars usually only played 45s. If you wanted stereo now, you would buy the reverb and rear speaker kit. They were generally available at Zaire's or Uncle Bill's. You could get popular with that setup, but if you actually had a COLOR TV I hope you like having guests.

Since this is only "kind of" Humor, put it this way. If you are young, you see easily that I am 48, but to know what that means is a different story. To see what people did with the technology of the time was quite amazing to those who lived it.

I do not have a TV in my apartment, let alone in a car =)

Yes I guess it was just a fad.

I had a walkman when I was younger....and I'm just about 22. XD

FourQ -> RE: Humor.....kind of :) (7/2/2009 10:45:30 AM)

I remember a few things, we had an old Betamax before VHS.  We had 33's/45's/78's at home before the walkman.  I remember long, medium and short wave radio before the days of DAB.  I remember tape drive before the days of 5ΒΌ" floppy diskettes.  I remember being showed and ultimately using BBS before the days of the internet.  I'm only 34!

A technically challenged friend of mine commented on me having Fawlty Towers on DVD as I was planning either a Monty Python or Fawlty Towers night.  He advised me "I didn't think they had DVD's to put it on back then".
After rolling my eyes I pointed out that "Schubert didn't have f'kin MP3/CD/tape/vinyl but it's available on each!".

I always feel weird when this kind of thing happens, I am only 19 and I remember borrowing my sisters walkman. Oh the memory of how females would sing base as the walkman ran out of batteries.
