A Rant
There are certain movies I just can’t watch anymore. E.T. is one. It reminds me of my father too much. I’m beginning to fear that Lord Of The Rings will be another.
She never read the books, couldn’t name most of the characters and had virtually no clue what was going on, but she loved those movies, if only for Elijah Wood’s eyes. Her obsession is such, sometimes I fancy that in a previous life she was a raven or a crow. On the phone she would insist I talk to her in the same pseudo-British accent Elijah used while she masturbated.
When I told her, shortly before the third film came out, that Frodo would be captured, stripped, bound and whipped, she bounced off the walls and complained bitterly each day until the premiere. And if the movie pulled its punches a little, she still emerged from the theater with her head spinning and her panties wet.
When the DVD was released in the spring, she all but burned a hole in it, playing that one scene over and over again. She nearly burned a hole in my brain as well, making me write about what it must have been like for Elijah to film that scene, over and over again, each subsequent draft growing darker, more elaborate and fantastic. That was her way, to get an idea in her head and have me flesh it out for her time and time again, until her urge was finally satiated.
There were other films, and other obsessions, but something about that film will always be special.
I miss her.
