Heres an interesting question for America's Independence day celebrations.

Why do we celebrate Independence day with fire works?

I think it's this...

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Come to think of it....

you know the SSB was a poem before it was a song.

Have you ever seen all the words?  It's really quite moving.

The Star Spangled Banner Lyrics
By Francis Scott Key 1814

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Sunny, one of the most incredible times I've ever had was going to Fort McHenry in Baltimore and touring the grounds, seeing the life-sized replica flag (the original is at the Smithsonian) of the one that flew during that battle that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Bangled Banner. The history behind the poem turned song is amazing, just remembering it is giving me goosebumps.

Also, about the fireworks, it used to be traditional to fire off guns and canons. Once fireworks came into the country, they helped make local celebrations beautiful and exciting. Of course, the original fireworks were nothing like what we have today, chemistry and scientific advancements make modern fireworks look like miracles of God to what they used to shoot off.   And everybody loves sparklers!

Well, you weren't supposed to try to put it out with your bare thumb, Greedy. That's why you're always supposed to keep a bucket of water around.

(Though my mom still wants to kick a few asses from the fires we set a while back while launching fireworks from her property....)

Ouch.... had that happen a few times but never enough to scar. Good to still keep a bucket of water around - to plunge your hand in!

Sunny, it was so incredible that I highly recommend visiting there, American or not. What appalled me was the complete lack of American History shown by a large number of visitors (Americans at that!) while there. Some of them didn't even know there'd been a war in 1812 or what it was about! I spent as long as I could there, just going through and around the entire complex. My friend was laughing at first but then started realizing what she'd missed by not knowing what happened there. The longer we were there and the more she listened, the quieter she got. Finally, as we were driving away, with the sun going down on the fort, she just said quietly "thank you, I had no idea about any of that. I wonder what else I've missed?"  She learned a lot that trip since I dragged her to every historical place and marker I could find. Fort Ticonderoga was great too!

John Adams wrote to Abigail that the country's brithday "ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."

...because we celebrate everything with fireworks??? New Years Day, Memorial Day, Chinese New Year, Chinese Moon Festival,

...because fireworks are safer than shooting our shotguns into the sky???

...to use up the old gunpowder???

...to scare away evil spirits (the Chinese did this as early as the 12th century)

Sunshine, thank you for posting the complete poem. Rain, viewing historical sites in person is so much more interesting than just skimming through textbooks.

Quite a few countries and cultures celebrate their new years and founding with fireworks shows. Fire is a symbol of renewal, destroying the old and from the ashes a new creation arises.
