Hello everybody, familiar and unfamiliar... I haven't been on the message boards since early November, when I went to Florida to spend my mother's last days on this earth with her. When I got back I found myself needing, shall we say, "instant gratification" from actually chatting rather than reading posts. I've been a denizen of a few of the chatrooms on collarme since then, and today I realized how detrimental that is to my life and what I want to do with it. I've "met" some nice people in there actually... a couple of them I'm going to meet for lunch or dinner as my travels take me to their areas. I've also met some real idiots, trolls if you want to put it another way. I got myself too embroiled in chatroom drama. I dont need that crap, it's not real, which is the basis for the question I'd like to put out in this post. If it's been discussed to death already that's fine too, just give me links and I'll go look, I don't need any snide remarks about it being discussed to death! [;)] Here goes: This is particularly for longtimers, preferably those who've been involved with this lifestyle since before the internet (yeah, I'm asking alot, I know), but of course I'd love to hear from everyone. What impact do you think the internet has made on the BDSM lifestyle in general? Do you think it has made it more accessible to: 1. genuine people who want and need to explore feelings they didn't know had a name 2. players and swingers who are simply out for a little bit of wank time For each of the above has this been good or bad for whatever image, shadowy or not, the letters BDSM conjure up? Obviously this question is stemming from the experiences I have had in the chatrooms. For the record, my husband knows I have been in them and I have told him about some of the characters, sane and otherwise, I have met in there. I have not engaged in behavior inappropriate for me, it's mostly the drama and bullshit that has made me step back and say to myself, "wtF are you doing????????" Good overall. People like you and me eventually wise up to its pointlessness and move on. People who stay online are safely held online and caught up in all the drama of their own making (and I think we all know that a good 30-50% of the posters on collarme are wrapped up in the same sort of drama). Well, along with age comes memory degredation and quite frankly I don't remember when the internet, e-mails and cyber everything became the mainstream of communication by our culture. I think I pulled up my first porn site in the 80's and realized just how wonderful the internet could be, when I was just reaching puberty [;)] Fastlane has fingers crossed! What I think the internet enables in our lifestyle for the younger generation, is the ability to learn more about it in a week than many of us could learn in a year, when we began to realize our interest, many years ago. I think the effect of the internet on BDSM has been the same as it ha been on other forms of communication. To create more global communitites instead of just local ones. Information is more accessible to individuals. I do not think that it has increased the number of whankers and wannabees, merely made their existance more obvious. I not only know of local wannabees now, I can know about ones in Chicago or in Calcutta. Best, LaMalinche
