TheHeretic -> True or False? (7/7/2009 7:50:29 PM)

      This grabbed my attention in another thread, and I thought perhaps it deserved a place to be explored.

     "liberalism is a dark worldview filled with negativity and bitterness."

      I agree with this.  The notion that government must control the people, and protect them from themselves...  I find that very dark and negative.

    What do you think of the highlighted statement above.  True or False?

    ( The exact quote is from lifted from rulemylife, but I think he was sarcastically paraphrasing someone else, and that someone may very well have heard it on the radio or something.)

TreasureKY -> RE: True or False? (7/7/2009 7:56:39 PM)

Hmmm.... true and false.

Liberalism kinda leaves a funny taste in my mouth.  There's the negativity you mention, but the other part is sickly sweet and unrealistic.  It's kinda like hippies and rose colored glasses and John Lennon's "Imagine".  [:-]

slvemike4u -> RE: True or False? (7/7/2009 8:00:15 PM)

False
hippies and rose colored glasses my ass.

You think?

You mean you saw my response and somehow managed to miss the little box that contained the quote of the original poster in the same post?

Bored Heretic?

Because I see we're trolling for another pissing contest tonight.

slvemike4u -> RE: True or False? (7/7/2009 8:06:17 PM)

Does this thread actually warrent a pissing contest Rule.....the question and the form in which it is asked paints way to a simplistic picture of a complex political ideology....and basically asks if you agree or disagree with this simplistic picture.
And oh yeah...the simplistic picture painted is very dark and filled with negativity and bitterness.

subrob1967 -> RE: True or False? (7/7/2009 8:11:40 PM)

True, as proven by the responses shown here.

slvemike4u -> RE: True or False? (7/7/2009 8:16:49 PM)

False, as proven by who is supporting it here.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: True or False? (7/7/2009 8:20:33 PM)

Neither.  I am extremely liberal on a lot of social issues.  I'm fiscally conservative and a Hawk on foreign relations.  I don't label myself as either.  If I am asked which I am, I say I am an American.

FirmhandKY -> RE: True or False? (7/7/2009 8:21:53 PM)

True.

However, what I see are Stalin, Chavez, Marx, Castro, and their ilk.

Is that what liberalism is?

That is what you see when you think of American liberals....how very sad for you.
Unable to see shades and colors....evrything in black and white....so sad.

    Actually, RML, I was hoping to drag the conversation from the pettiness of political personalities (though I know some are completely obsessed by that) and see if we can approach political philosophy.  Do feel free to not participate.

slvemike4u -> RE: True or False? (7/7/2009 8:59:17 PM)

Well if none of us dirty liburals participate....its going to be an awfully boring thread.....just saying....you need us [:D]

Where did "American" come in to play?

So remove the offending word....the post is cool with or without it.

I think the extremes of both sides have their own brand of darkness. (Hence why I'm a middle-ground walker.)

The "right" says that liberals want what you described above, the "left" says that the "right" has been spying on and robbing citizens of their freedoms for the past 8 years.

It's not just liberals that want the government to control the people. Every bible-beating 'mom' that wants a radio show banned because her youngin' "might hear it," every one who wants the FCC to fine and fine and ban another show for its content, every parent that demands the schools raise their young. It seems no 'side' is safe from wanting the government to either control them or 'protect' them.

It all boils down to the fact that, with an increasing regularity, people don't want to take responsibility for their own actions anymore. This isn't a liberalism thing....it's a country-wide thing from what I've seen.

Psst... No one has to actually specify anything.  He just fills in the blanks with whatever he wants.  [;)]

And which of those people locked up others in 'concentration camps?'

Oh wait....that was Hitler. Wait...who else....oh yes. We did it too. Let's ask the Japanese-Americans from the WWII days.....or perhaps for a more recent perspective....how about we ask Muslim Americans today?

      Lennon's Imagine is a pretty heavy dose, Treasure.  I see the sickly sweet and unrealistic as a precursor to the darkness, and an inevitable authoritarianism.  When not everybody goes along with the imagination, they must be MADE to see the light.

So why did you put it in, in the first place?

As Heretic said, we are talking philosophy.

I don't think all liberals are evil or bad.  In fact, I think we need them, a lot.

But, when liberalism=collectivism, then we have the people such as I mentioned above, and liberalism is a darkness on the human soul.
