ORIGINAL: midnitelace So is hypnosis anything like the power of suggestion? I have always been told over and over and over again my entire life that I can succeed at what i want to succeed at...by this power of suggestion ...i believe it...though i really don't see my life as it is right now very successful lol. I guess it is just what one wants to believe. ::nods enthusiastically:: Exactly so! Just as how the power of suggestion you point out here has little effect on reality, but only changes our basic attitude, so hypnosis can not really change anything except to bring out some part of ourselves which already exists. It's easy to come up with some phantasmagorical threat revolving around hypnosis - you'll go crazy, or you'll become somebody's puppet-slave, or you'll divulge some secret that you didn't want anyone to know. Won't happen. If you already had a disassociative personality problem, hypnosis might cause an attack. If you are extremely submissive or WANT to surrender control, you'll be a puppet slave - for a while. If you talk about the seven extra years of bed-wetting, you probably wanted to get that off of your chest. Yes, a truly masterful hypnotist can persuade you to see things their way, over a long period of time, but believe it or not, your own personality is hardwired into you on a far more solid foundation than anything that can be whispered in your ear. You will reassert your own will, once your own psyche comes to realize that whatever has been implanted does not jive. Of course, if you WANT to believe, you can experience almost anything through hypnosis. I, for one, am the only person in the world to have ever experienced a past life in Atlantis, as a janitor. Every priest, king, sorcerer, architect, or other grandiose person from the antediluvial prehistory has ME to thank for their spotless city! Is it real? probably not, but by jimminy, I WANT to believe! ~S
