I have a question for those that are non-believers, atheists, etc.
When you pray, or say you are praying....Who are you praying to?

I have wanted to ask this for a long time.

I see many here that go to great lengths to explain that they do not believe in GOD, there
is no GOD, etc. on and on until the break of dawn.

Then I turn around and read where these same people tell others, they are praying for them.
WHO are you praying to?
to the air? to the ground? to other human beings? to the man in the moon? aliens? satan? grasshoppers?
seriously,who?

I totally understand that you are not a Believer, I just want to know who you are praying to?

LOL, it appears to be a common occurrence.
I hear/read/see it a lot, especially here on CollarMe.

I do not really understand how prayer works.  Nor am I really sure I understand what it is.

I do know the most comprehensive prayer study demonstrated that prayer does not work.  In fact those prayed for became sicker.  The study was done by one of the most respected research groups in the USA.  It is an accepted and documented study.

I never tell someone I'll pray for them. I tell people that 'I'll keep you in my thoughts' or similiar.

When I tell someone that I am "praying" for them, it means that I am thinking positive thoughts, sending good energy, that kind of thing.  The aliens, notion, though, I might look into that!

Um...I don't pray.

Maybe these other people are using the term as a figure of speech?

I know of no atheist who prays...except maybe to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I really did not look for it.
I participated in one of those 20 page threads about Believers last year.
Since then, I have seen at least 5-10 non-Believers tell other people on HERE, they are praying for them.

I am like, wait a minute, didn't you say up and down, on 30 pages, a million times you did not believe in any higher power and you are an atheist?
Sorry, I DO notice things like that.

It weirds me out a bit.

I just need to know, I am curious like that.

Don't overlook the grasshopper idea, either. That one sounds like it has potential.

Odd. I am a believer, and generally speaking I don't believe in prayer. I figure god knows what he's doing. Who am I to tell him how to do his job? It'll turn out the way it turns out.

Thank you all for your responses!

Esinn? I am a Believer.

I do pray, I really don't care what the study says.

My question was not whether prayer works, my question is:

Who do people that do NOT believe in GOD/a higher power pray to, when they say they are praying?

Some have said, it was a figure of speech.

Why say it, if you really are not going to do it or if you do not believe in it?
Things that make me go hummmm.

I should have said panda's and grasshoppers.
This is a serious question for me!

I'm a dedicated agnostic and I sometimes pray.
It's a self-soothing throw-back to my days as a christian.
It's also the acknowledgment that I'm sneding positive thoughts and placing my mindset in the direction of the goodness or benefit of whatever I am praying about.
That having been said, I rarely pray.

Are you saying you pray in general, and you are not praying to anyone?

I am a beliver I just do not see god the same way as the Christian might. Being very serious here:

I pray to the Universe. That which has good and bad (not evil); and a ever balanced math equation which is far more complex than our human reasoning can fathom.

Thank you MstrPBK, I think there are all types of "Believers and Christians" out here.
Many of us are "out of the box".

Thank you so much.

I don't pray. I think about my problems, life, blah, blah. I come to a rational decision, than I put it into action. If it works, it was me, I did it. It wasn't a magical good man or one of his helpers. If it fails, it was me, my fault. It wasn't a magical evil man or one of his helpers.

Sure.  :>
Yes, I pray in general.  If you catch me in a particularly odd/fubar moment, I might admit to hoping that there's some sort of sane interventionist god that can make everything better (Though I don't believe that for a second).  Other than that, it's more of a focusing of energy on the positivity of the sentiment, of placing it 'out there' because why not.  Also, I often entertain the 'thou art god' approach to things, so it could be a call out to all things in the Universe, myself included.

Why say it, if you really are not going to do it or if you do not believe in it?

When you say "I ate like a pig!", do you actually mean you stood on all fours and pretended to have a snout while eating with your face from a trough?

Ever pissed like a racehorse?
Bawled your eyes out?
Racked your brain?
