Aimtoplease101 -> Public symbols (2/16/2006 10:59:47 PM)

Have you ever thought that meeting people with similar interests in the bdsm lifestyle would be a lot easier if there was some discrete symbol that dommes and subs could wear in public? Like a blue bracelet, or a red toe ring, or a black tie. Something that was not so unusual as to draw attention from the uninitiated, but sufficiently unique/ rare to serve as an identifying sign to those who know what to look for?

To do so wopuld mean forming an International Governing Body and disallow the autonomy of people. Besides which, would you really expect to regulate Gorean Lifestylers???? Over regulation is worse then no regulations.

Arrogant? Yes
Self Assured? Yes
Asertive? Yes
Independent? Yes
Nonconformist? Yes untill it suits me to conform.
Lone maverick? My bloody oath .. Yes!
Master? Yes ~ Of myself, My Home, and My diverse skills some of which would give you screeming nightmares.
Friend? To some whom I lay all I have on the line to help and defend. To others, they dont appear on my radar.....

ownedgirlie -> RE: Public symbols (2/16/2006 11:59:20 PM)

Government regulation? And here i was thinking she meant a nice little discreet symbol. Like the way some people have a "fish" on their car, or how some people wear the Star of David (yes, i know those aren't really discreet).

i rather like the idea of an "underground" symbol. Often when i see a woman wearing a thick choker i wonder if it is a collar.

(Speaking of collars, the other day in my haste to get to work i forgot to remove my prescribed dog collar and showed up at the office wearing it - i bet to anyone in the know, THAT would have been a symbol...!!)

Hmm, how 'bout a bumper sticker that says "Honk if you submit".....

Okay okay forgive me, it's late and i am quite tired...[:)]

IronBear -> RE: Public symbols (2/17/2006 12:18:06 AM)

Ahhh you mean like the bumper stickers I used to produce which the Freemantle police used to have on their vehicals and various shop owners used to display which said "The Lords of Karmah Have Size 12 Boots and Blue Uniforms"?????? I likew your ideas.. BTW.

Hahaha...perhaps the ISO will tackle this one day...

How about little handcuff ear rings? Those always get my attention when I see them.

MistressAlexaS -> RE: Public symbols (2/17/2006 4:08:57 AM)

My boyfriend and I bought a pair of handcuff earrings. I wear one in my left ear as a dangle uncuffed, he wears his in his left ear cuffed. It was his idea and I liked it. Occasionally we have people look at us when they see them, I had one gent ask me about it. I told him "I'm a Domme, so be a good boy or I might spank you." Of course I said this with a smile on my face and he sat back and grinned, a blush in his cheeks.

It would be nice to have a secret handshake or code phrase (I hear the salmon are running well today) to give to people you see that you think might be part of the club, but it would have to be something as universally recognizable as the gay community's pink triangle (and that was not something they came up with on their own) or the Christian fish (something that has been in use for 2,000 years.

It's tricky, because that triskelion pendant, might be just a triskelion (sometimes you have to get rather close to tell the diff), and handcuff jewelry or accessories (I had a belt when I was a teenager that fastened with handcuffs-it was a fashionable accessory, not a symbol of anything) might just be trendy jewelry or accessory. My boy's training collar came from a fashionable jewelry store, lots of people are just wearing them as necklaces (they also have matching bracelets and rings).

Such time as the bdsm community is able to come up from the underground, organize and do some politicking to actually get rights for ourselves, like other groups, such as the gay community, there will be no visible, universally recognizable symbol.

Enters, dips His lid to all with a huge toothy smile..............

Great suggestion aimtoplease. Yes it is so difficult with 'how to make a decision for everybody" which for some automaticly means politics and beauracracy.

Lets have a government inquiry to find out what the people want- come up with suggestions, let the people vote but we will ignore them,, rah rah rah, in Aussie we have Royal Commissions or the occassional plebiscite........ but it's very understandable how we get just negativity from some people. These people are understandably jaded from previous experiences.

PEOPLE POWER can still reign supreme, and I for one are an Optimistic Dom.

Although I may not completely agree with Iron's 'take' this time, his essence of an IGO has some truth particularly when He shakes His Gorean Master's whip indicating that Gor is another planet and Goreans have a different set of ideals..... Admittedly you're right Iron Bear- (ha, Iron says at this) The lifestyle as a collective voice is very fragmented, and although all serious Lifestylers have a base type of ethics, we do not have the 'personal collective voice' in the internet communities,(probably never will) like true next door neighbours (they exist in my town still)

It still comes down to a person wearing something kinky, suggestive etc and another Lifestyler asking a veiled question regarding what they see. I'd like to see what you ask but like Iron consider it impossible- like do we have an 'EARTH Planet' flag?

Like, Ownedgirlie's carsticker is perfect if only we all were subs, somewhat similar to Iamready; earrings (both my Precious girls have earring whips) but forget it, I am not wearing an earring! Love the carsticker though!

I used to have on my car- 'Sleep safe- sleep with a Cop' but thanks to IronBear's sticker it became a cut n' pasted mix font sticker of:

Sleep safe,
Sleep with size 12 boots and a blue cop uniform
Sleep with a Lord of Karma!

damm then add ownedgirlie's under that!
HONK if you submit!

Pity I've grown up a bit Iron!!!

Smiles and no offence intended to anyone..............

Except you can buy those at Claire's these days, a store that markets to girls age 8-16.

Not that they can't be subs or doms at that age, but it doesn't really mean much today.

Have you ever heard of "flagging"? That's a public signal system that's been around for quite awhile.

IronBear -> RE: Public symbols (2/17/2006 5:54:01 AM)

Ok LA, I'm just a dumb 'Ol Grizzly, WTF is Flagging? (I figure it isn't what happens when you get stuffed doing physical things..[:D])

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Public symbols (2/17/2006 6:12:27 AM)

It's basically just a system of wearing a hanky in your back pocket to show what you're into/what you're looking for. A grey hanky in your back left pocket means you're a top into bondage.

Left is top, giver, dominant etc. (D-types). Right is bottom, receiver, submissive etc (S-types)

Some people flag in ways other than with a pocket hanky (traditionally a bandana). Color specific armbands on the left or right arm are becoming popular especially in the gay leather community. Master Archer has a D-ring attached to the left epaulet of his leather jacket, another subtle symbol of a Top.

MistressFire70 -> RE: Public symbols (2/17/2006 7:02:38 AM)

There are symbols already and I'm surprised no one has answered about them. There is the BDSM triskele (which is NOT legally copyrighted, as research has shown) and the leather pride flag. There is also now a Master/slave Dom/sub pride flag.

He enters, Laughing..............

I'm with you Iron, us dumbass aussies or do we K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple n' stupid) for the joy of communication, of interacting with others, asking questions, and maybe meeting firends.

This FLAGGING all seems too subversive, and complicating, and may I say, Mc Fast Take-away! There is so much fun to be learnt in how to FLAG and for what means- McBDSM?

Thanks MisstressFire for the helpful links-----

Sorry but I have to find a BDSM pulbic toilet/convenience block to showoff my coloured hankie for acceptance to the BDSM Community!

Departs still laughing, shaking head, muttering K.I.S.S.

McBDSM - sounds like the latest special at McDonalds.

Driver1961 -> RE: Public symbols (2/17/2006 7:31:31 AM)

Mistress of Fire:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triskele#BDSMdoesn't seem to address the most similar BDSM Triskele that I saw on television worn by buddist monks in Asia. The symbol represents to them, say, health, happiness and knowledge and is eons old. I believe these people would find the use of our symbol/their symbol highly sacriligous.

Regards ...........

LaMalinche -> RE: Public symbols (2/17/2006 8:56:42 AM)

Hmmm. . .

McBDSM

sure

it will go with the McSpirituality that I see that so many have

can we go get McMuffins now and some McCoffee?

. . .

Oh, and now my bracelts have to MEAN something?

I think I like the KISS method better.

And here is an even wilder idea. . . how about we just ASK people? What a unique thought.

*grumble* *grumble*

Best,

LaMalinche

Interesting you should say this my friend, I am decidingon either a simple celtic triscele or triknot as the personal "brand" when I collar another girl in my personal collar. It will be the centre piece of a celtic morphic sesign which will mbe tattooed over her pubic area. the design will have a spiritual/magickal meaning as well.
