for breathplay, I avoid choking at all costs. it's just too risky. I also try to avoid putting much pressure on the carotid either. I'd rather avoid manslaughter charges. this isn't to say that you have to avoid strangling a woman with her shirt or your belt. you can wrap something around someone's neck and manipulate where pressure is applied (by having it wrapped around your hand) in a manner that gives the recipient the illusion they are being strangled much more roughly than they actually are. the more drunk on sex the person is, the more authentic the feel. other than good old choking, there's always a sink full of water. give someone a piece of metal or some other heavy noisy implement to drop as the safeword (if you use them - and trust me, having a wrench dropped on your foot let's you know they need air). again, the effect is a lot greater than the reality of the situation. if a woman's getting sodomized or beaten, 8-12 seconds underwater seems like a lot longer than it really is. 25 seconds makes her feel like she's a little trooper. and when you're just starting out, pinching the nose and covering the mouth works great. it has that same old-fashioned breathplay feel but the recipient can easily get oxygen if they really want to.
