The christian right is a socially conservative movement made up primarily of evangelicals. They have long been the GOP's single most reliable voting bloc. They are responsible for virtually all the anti abortion, anti sex ed, anti evolution ed and anti gay political activism inside the US.

The christian left is a movement made up mostly of people in the peace and civil rights movements. While they don't get national coverage as much they are a vital part of most of the social movements I care about.

(They were once...merely a decade ago....the Democrats single most reliable voting bloc(k)).

The christian right was a reliable voting bloc for the Democrats in 1999? I think not. The last time the christian right could be considered reliable voters for democratic candidates was during the lifetime of William Jennings Bryan and he died in 1925.

Are you suggesting that the christian left agrees with abortion and free love? Do you honestly believe that?

Tsssk, tsssk, Lookie: the more right-leaning, conservative, fundamentalist, or whatever sub-population of Christianity hates gays, mostly . . . . . Leftist, progressive, liberal, whatever sub-population of Christians like gays, mostly . . . . . All those gay ministers & such being ordained is a handy indicator of how liberal leaning that sect is . . . ..

Christ didn't hate gays.

Modern Christians hate gays.

If that were true, then why didn't gay marriage pass in California? Oh and why does my LIBERAL preacher say that being gay is a sin?

Ok...I kinda/sorta thought it was going to be something like that, just didn't know they labelled the sides left and right.  All I can say is I'm glad I'm on the left.  And dont know how they can be so anti anything, when they claim they're all for freedom.

(Just for a quick record too, its not that pro-choice people are for abortion.  Pro-choice people are for CHOICE!!!!  A woman should choose whats right for her body, her health, and her life.  Not have a bunch of stuffy people who know nothing about the situation dictate to them.  And thats what the right aims to do.....dictate the situation)

Which ironic especially since:

Christ was very much a Liberal.
Then why does he hate gays so much?

God's like that. He takes pleasure in other beings' hardship. Schadenfreude and all that.

Maybe it was a smidge beyond a decade, however, Clinton manipulated that group for all it was worth.

One of the biggest items on Rove's agenda back in '98 was indeed, getting the Christians, who had up until then been largely in the Dems pocket, into Carl's.

And he got 'em.

Asked and answered.

(I couldn't possibly improve on that).

DemonKia -> RE: The Christian right should be so proud...... (7/11/2009 9:35:51 AM)

lol

This is the part where the individual-data-points-vary-widely complicates the big generalities -- both have their validity, tho' . . . .

& in my book, one of the determiners of whether I agree that someone is 'liberal' is how they feel about homosexuality, in which case I'd disagree that your religious person is liberal . ..... & the various sects that allow homosexual ministers to be ordained are, in my eyes, 'liberal' . . . .

Or, more liberal, since this ain't light-switches we're discussing . . ... If it's an either-or kinda thing for you, that would seem, to me, to be a frustrating space to inhabit, since so few things clearly fit into tidy boxes . . .. .

&, in my eyes, the gay marriage thing is happening, it's an inexorable tide that is slowly working its way . . .. . Cali already has had domestic partnerships for a long time (I think we were one of the first states to offer those), & one of these days we'll get the whole package . ...

Oh. & yeah. Cali is now in the odd position that all those gay marriages that were performed during that brief period while it was legal, those are valid marriages . .. . lol .. . So. Technically, we do have gay marriage in Cali, for some . . . . . & like I said, a matter of time on the rest . . . . .

Thanks for asking. [:D]

Because the right and the rest of the world are reading 2 different bibles.

One, the rest of the world real bible.

and 2 the bible that exists in the little fantasy world that most netcons live in these days.

What I'm saying, based on 20+ years of working on causes dear to me, that the christian left includes people who are pro choice and others who are conflicted on the issue but respect the law of the land.

How being in favor of good sex ed equals supporting free love escapes me tbh.

Weren't you paying attention? Falwell and his Moral Majority were major supporters of Reagan. Pat Robertson twice made serious runs for the GOP presidential nomination. Clinton never got the majority of evangelicals and the group was never a factor in his winning election except that perhaps they stayed home because they weren't fans of Bush I or Dole.

As a simple reminder the RR's political activism coalesced in opposition to abortion rights post Roe V Wade. They have never supported a pro choice candidate.

This was my favorite part:

"Hampton said he, Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and others tried to get Ensign to break off the affair, as well as to help the Hamptons pay off their home and relocate to Colorado. They also persuaded Ensign to write a letter to Cindy Hampton apologizing for using her "for my own pleasure," Hampton said."

I take it Cindy received no pleasure?

Yes that is sadly true.

A recent study by Liberty University into the mating habits of Christian conservatives has concluded that the female of the species does indeed receive no pleasure from sex.

It was found that while the female was laying on her back and the Christian conservative male climbed on top (which is the only acceptable mating method among this group) the female would often yawn, have a bored, disinterested look on her face, or ask "are you done yet?".

The study reached no conclusions why this is true though speculated that foreplay consisting of reading Bible passages may have had a negative effect on the female.

Falwell and Robertson endorsed both Bush I and Dole. No major RR figure ever endorsed Clinton.

I can't think of any reason to debate you on this....considering it's true.
