Curiously nary a comment(at least nothing I noticed)nor a discussion following the news of McNamara's passing. What gives ,were we to busy discussing Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcet?
Any opinions out there concerning this highly controversial figure?
(if there was a thread concerning his passing I must have missed it ......in that case I'm sorry)

There was a fairly lengthy thread in "Off Topic".  Here's the link...

A fairly lengthy thread in "Off Topic."

Edit: I am corrected. Guess it wasn't that lengthy a thread after all.  20 posts... seems like he would have merited a bit more than that, eh?

lol

McNamara's a subject for OCD, nerdy, policy wonks, like moi, hehehehe . . . . . . MJ & other celebs are pop culture. There's just fewer geeky political freaks than there are celebrity observers . ....

McNamara was a treasonous war criminal. There. That's all there is to say about him. He committed treason in getting the US in the Vietnam war on false pretenses.
You can read it in the Johnson papers now that the 25 years are up.
He confessed to being a war criminal in a PBS documentary, relative to fire bombing civilians in Germany.

I thought about him a great deal, listened to some interviews with him, listened to some interviews of others about him.  I read his book some years ago.  There is something to admire in a person of such high rank being able to disclose, so openly, his incredible regrets.

Certainly, he was less well known than MJ, good or bad.  I gave more serious thought to MacNamara's passing than Jackson's.

McNamara was no more a war criminal than anyone else who has conducted a war.    He mismanaged the war, he mismanaged the military, and before he took that job he was the guy who decieded that what the T-Bird really needed was a back seat
