Maybe they changed their minds and figured you would not be a good match? They might want a relationship but they might not want it with you, I'm not trying to put you down, but not everybody is everybody's type and maybe the more you talked the more they realized that while you might be a perfectly nice person, you are simply not close enough to what they are looking for? Would they have met you, it might have been a waste of your time and their time and your feelings might have been hurt even more.
On the other hand, it could be that they were just playing a game, who knows? As people pointed out, online you never know who you are talking to and a kinky site is not different in that respect than a vanilla site.
