I am currently reading Winston Churchill's memoirs of the Second World War, and that is where I got this anecdote.
First to set the scene. It is Fall 1941 and the Germans (who up until they invaded in late June were allys of the USSR) are deep into the USSR, approaching Leningrad and Moscow. The Briritsh and Americans have sent a mission to the USSR to work out what supplies and munitions will be sent through Lend/Lease. One of the members of this mission was a Royal Marine, and he was taken on a tour of Moscow by an Intourist guide...

"This" said the Russian, "is the Eden Hotel, formerly Ribbentrop Hotel. Here is Churchill Street, formerly Hitler Street. Here is the Beaverbrook railway station, formerly Goering railway station. Will you have a cigarette, comrade?
To which the Marine replied. "Thank you, comrade, formerly bastard!"

He had a marvellous sense of humour, here's a site I came across which should amuse all and sundry.

My favourite of his is "if you're going through hell, keep going".

Arpig,

One of my great joys from the internet was the ability to
treasure hunt for old books. One of my favorite finds was
WINSTON CHURCHILL, An Informal Study Of Greatness
by Robert Lewis Taylor. I had some of Taylor's other books and
made the mistake of loaning them. I replaced them and found
this gem.

Being an outlier and not having mainstream tastes is sometimes
an advantage.

I will add Churchill's exchange with GB Shaw. Shaw sent him two
tickets to the opening night of his new play with a note that said;
"Enclosed are two tickets to my new play, bring a friend, if you have one.

Churchill replied: "Can’t possibly attend your first night. Will attend
the second night … if there is one"

Churchill was a writer as well as a politician and statesman.
And I loved his quote when asked how he expected history to treat him.
"I expect history will treat me very well, because I expect to write it myself."

The man was a wonderful wit.

He did indeed outlier. If you have not read anything of his I heartily recommend doing so. I am on volume 3 of his history and it gives an amazingly indepth and intimate look at the actual running of the war in Britain. At the moment I have just finished the section on the joint Anglo-Russian invasion of Iran in late 1941, an episode that is rarely mentioned beyond the fact that a supply route through Iran was established. The book consists, basically of Churchill's telegraphs and memos back and forth with the various members of the British Government, Roosevelt, and Stalin, with Churchill's commentary as you go along....really fascinating stuff.
